Play-the-Recorder Month is Approaching

Play-the-Recorder Day is March 16

There are only 31 days until Play-the-Recorder Month! The goal is to play with others during March, and especially on Play-the-Recorder Day, March 16. Whether it's with a friend in your living room, a small group in a library, a regular chapter gathering, a recorder orchestra, a virtual platform, there are many options to play with others. Plenty of online opportunities are listed below. Check our website's General Directory to see if there's a chapter near you by putting in your zip code; ARS members can find other members nearby in the Member Directory (requires login - click here for help).

Checking in with Chapters, Consorts, and Recorder Orchestras

Welcome to a New Chapter and Consort!

After a couple of pandemic years without a new group, ARS now has two: a new consort called Lauda Musicam of Austin (TX), and a new chapter, the San Antonio Recorder Society, also in Texas. Like all chapters, the San Antonio chapter is open to all levels of recorder players. Lauda Musicam of Austin is a closed consort, but please go to their website if you're interested in learning more and joining.

Denver Chapter Adds New Basic Technique Sessions

The chapter offers basic technique classes, in a hybrid format -- in person and also on Zoom. The skills are then put to use playing music for the monthly chapter meeting with the more advanced players.

A Brief Reminder of ARS Scholarship & Grant Deadlines

Weekend Workshops Apply four weeks before funding is needed. Virtual events are also eligible for funding from Grants and Scholarships, as long as the amounts do not exceed stated limits.

Chapter and Recorder Orchestra Grants These grants are awarded to Chapters or Recorder Orchestras with 10 or more ARS members to supplement membership-enhancing programs. Deadline: May 15, with funds to be used after September 1

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Grant Any chapter, recorder orchestra, or consort may apply. Partner Workshops and Businesses are also eligible. Apply anytime.

Workshop Scholarships Any member who needs financial assistance to attend an in-person or online weekend or week-long workshop may apply for this scholarship. Deadline for week-long workshops: May 15

Traveling Teacher Program Recorder communities without a recorder teacher in their area may apply for a grant to cover a professional teacher's traveling costs. Deadline: May 1, to be used after September 1

Two Class Options

1) Out and Beyond the Bass-ics

Tuesdays, January 30, February 6, 13, 27 (note no class on February 20): 10 - 11:30 AM, PT

Take all four or many as you like. Each individual class is $25, or $30 if you want to be able to download the recording.

Anyone wishing to go to the next level with their bass recorder playing who can read bass clef and can play a chromatic two-octave scale from the low F is welcome. We will use some material from the 1986 edition of Helmut Mönkemeyer’s bass method, work with Eric Haas’ books of duets for the bass, and movements from J. S. Bach’s cello suites in recorder transcription. Some work on improvising over ground basses will be included. Pitch: a=440.


2) Duos by Telemann, Staeps, and Blaker

Tuesdays, January 30, February 6, 13, 27 (note no class on February 20): 1:30 - 3 PM, PT

Explore a sampling of the wealth of recorder duos from the 18th, 20th, and 21st centuries by Georg Philipp Telemann, Hans Ulrich Staeps, and Frances Blaker. Geared toward upper intermediate to advanced alto recorder players but all are welcome.

Take all four or many as you like. Each individual class is $25, or $30 if you want to be able to download the recording.

Marea Chernoff through The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music is offering online recorder classes for the Winter term. Two workshops of three sessions each are available:


1) Intro to Basic Ornamentation

1/29/24, 2/5, 24, and 2/12/25


2) Intro to the Sonata

2/26/24, 3/4/24, and 3/11/24
