With Autism Awareness Month just around the corner, ARI's staff is quite busy working on initiatives to recognize the challenges individuals, families, and professionals continue to face during this second year of the Covid-19 pandemic. We are pleased to announce planning has begun for our annual scientific research grant program and resumption of our in-person scientific meeting later this year.

Our photos and stories forge connections and generate understanding, particularly this year, when so many of us have been isolated due to the pandemic. Innate stress response may link maternal infection to autism |
|
|
|
Maternal inflammation contributes to autism by sparking an innate stress response in male, but not female, fetuses, according to a new mouse study published in Nature Neuroscience. The results could help explain why infection during pregnancy is associated with an increased likelihood of having a child who is later diagnosed with ASD. |

Exercises that are similar to stereotypical behaviors are most effective in reducing these behaviors |
|
|
|
A new study published recently in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise indicates that while physical exercise can help reduce stereotypic behaviors in children with ASD, it is important to select exercises that are functionally similar to the physical movements they are meant to address. |

Participate in Research:
Seeking families who have boy and girl siblings diagnosed with ASD
|
|
|
|
Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Autism Research Institute are seeking families to participate in this study who have both boy and girl siblings with autism. These families will be mailed stool kits with instructions and will be asked to collect samples. A brief medical history will be taken.
