Scholarship in Honor of Brian Pond

Last week we shared the sad news of the passing of our former colleague Brian Pond. Brian’s family and colleagues expressed an interest in continuing Brian’s legacy through a memorial scholarship and The Los Rios Colleges Foundation has the scholarship established and is now able to accept donations. If you would like to donate, you can visit the Give Now webpage choosing the ARC Brian Pond Memorial in the drop-down options.

Brown Bag with Brian

Join Chancellor Brian King at an upcoming Brown Bag session at American River College! These informal gatherings are an excellent opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to engage directly with Chancellor King on the topics that matter most to them or the college community as a whole. Bring your lunch and join us for a fruitful discussion.

The next session at American River College will be on Tuesday, March 5 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm in the Student Center Board Room.

Announcing the Queer and Trans Community College Student Oral History Project!

The Queer and Trans Community College Student Oral History Project tells the stories of approximately 50 queer students in community colleges via video-recorded oral history interviews. The vast majority of the students attend one of the Los Rios Colleges.

Please visit QueerTransCollege.org to learn more!

These interviews, and the other resources provided on the website, are meant to help community college educators provide more robust and nuanced support for our queer and trans students in general, and more broadly our students of color, disabled and neurodiverse students, and our poor and working-class queer students in particular.

Please browse the interviews page, which houses the longer interviews with students, as well as the page with short videos on important themes in the lives and educational experiences of the students interviewed.

Please feel free to show these short videos in meetings and classes at your college to help colleagues students better serve our LGBTQ+ students.

Professor Sara Smith-Silverman (she/they), Professor of History and LGBTQ+ Studies at American River College oversaw the project and conducted the interviews. If you would like her to provide a short presentation to your department or division in the Spring of 2024 about how to serve our queer and trans students better, please email them at sara.smith@arc.losrios.edu.

Financial Aid Update

Students who are filling out their FAFSA have been experiencing an issue where contributors without a social security number (SSN) are unable to start or access the 2024-25 application form. Until it is resolved, the Federal Student Aid Commission has provided instructions for submitting the form if students have a contributor without an SSN. Please note that following the instructions will result in an incomplete FAFSA submission that the student must correct at a later date.
