President's Update
Walking the campus during the first week of instruction, one of my favorite moments was actually hearing some students complain that they couldn’t find parking. While I was empathetic toward our students and their search for a parking space, I was also delighted to hear that our face-to-face presence on campus has grown so much that we once again have to seek out a parking spot. Thank you to our entire community of faculty, staff and learners who have worked diligently over the past two years to increase our presence on campus. Dare I say that ARC is BACK!!!
In other great news, I was incredibly proud to receive word that the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, Western Association of Schools and Colleges, at its meeting January 11-12, 2023, acted to reaffirm American River College’s accreditation for 7 years. Copies of the Institutional Self Evaluation Report (ISER) and Peer Review Team Report are available for review on the College’s Accreditation website.
As we look forward and plan for the next decade and beyond, it’s important to reflect back. During my convocation address, I spoke about the incredible hard work the College has done over the past 10 years to discuss, research, and put onto paper how we can better serve our students. This work includes the following:
We still have more work to do. Over the past decade, our outcomes have not significantly changed. When students come to ARC, they arrive with the goal of economic and social mobility, yet only 10.9% to 16.5% of first-year, first-time students who began at ARC from 2015 to 2019 earned a degree, certificate, or transferred within three years.
| |
|
On average, less than 15% of our students annually get on a path, stay on a path, and complete their intended goal within three years to improve their economic and social mobility.
It is time to put our discussion, research, and writing into action. During the remainder of the Spring 2023 semester, the leadership team will be outlining a reorganization of the College to align Areas of Interest, HomeBases, and Instructional Areas. This reorganization will support structures that help students get on a path, stay on a path, and achieve their intended goal. At the same time, we will continue to use data to investigate the reasons behind our outcomes and the impacts of the work we are doing. We wouldn’t be at this important milestone without the critical work that the entire college - faculty, staff, administrators, and students – have done.
Thank you!
