PTAE SIG October Webinar

The first webinar of our 2022-2023 series will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2022, from 7:00 PM EST to 8:00 PM ET.  Tiffany Kiphart, PTA, ATC, M.Ed., will present Behavioral Assessment Framework for Admissions to a Physical Therapist Assistant Program.

This presentation will include an overview of the admissions process of a PTA program utilizing an innovative applicant assessment admissions plan. This assessment plan evaluates applicant behaviors related to professional skills and perseverance needed in a healthcare profession. Considering the challenges of educating the current college student with all the distractions of life warrants a new approach to viewing applicants to PTA educational programs was needed. Evaluating an applicant's ability to communicate effectively, act in a professional manner, and assess the applicant's ability to discuss their perceived levels of grit and college readiness, are challenging data collection points in the admissions process of PTA programs. The need for developing a broader picture of applicant abilities in all aspects of PTA education, led to the development of an assessment process that includes an objective observation of applicant behaviors, as well as, an assessment of their written work related to their perceived level of “grit” and college readiness.

Vision for Excellence
in PTE Activity/Project Inventory

Education Stakeholder:

You are being asked to add your work related to the six pillars and 22 guiding principles of A Vision for Excellence in Physical Therapy Education (published in 2021 as an open access supplement in JoPTE) to an inventory of activities and projects. The information you contribute to this initial national inventory of works related to the aims of the vision will be shared at ELC: A Vision for Excellence in Physical Therapy Education: A 2022 Action Update, Saturday, October 29, 10:30 a.m.-noon, Ballroom AB.

Please add your related work to this inventory by Friday, September 23, 2022. If you submit an inventory of work on behalf of a group or team, please let your partners know that you have added the activity or project. This initial inventory (Phase I) will allow stakeholders to connect and share work that aligns with the aims outlined in the vision; foster identification of existing work, gaps in work, and opportunities for collaboration; provide valuable data to the stakeholder community; and serve as a pilot to inform development of a long-term strategy (Phase II) to collect data that allows for broader stakeholder engagement and data filtering.

The six pillars of the vision:
  • Accessibility of Education.
  • Collaboration and Networks.
  • Competency-Based Education.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • Education Research and Data Management.
  • Infrastructure, Capacity, and Faculty Development.

Thank you for your contribution to this inventory.

Course Description:
  • The purpose of this course is to use evidence to promote excellence in physical therapy clinical education through Site Clinical Coordinator of Education (SCCE) and Clinical Instructor (CI) collective collaboration in real-time on their own plans and documents for improving their programs.
  • Participants will bring their laptops and existing documents and work in small groups on refining or creating templates to be used in their program. The day will be organized into four small presentations on evidence in clinical education with breakout time to work on the participant’s own site-specific documents with their small group. Short debriefing sessions as a large group will be interspersed for further collaboration.
  • We anticipate that participants can return to their clinic with new or refined tools in hand, a new network of colleagues to use as references, and feel that their program has a forward direction.
