CALL FOR RESEARCH GRANT PROPOSALS

Deadline: October 1

One-year research grants are available to assist Academy of Physical Therapy Education members in conducting research that investigates a question of importance to the advancement of education in physical therapy. In addition to research related to physical therapy education (DPT, PTA), questions related to the education of patients/clients, licensed PTs/PTAs or PT/PTA students will also be considered.

Applications are received and reviewed once yearly for a maximum budget of $25,000. Proposals with budgets less than the maximum $25,000 are welcomed. All budgets are rigorously reviewed and require justification for expenses. Grant recipients must account for all expenditures in the final report and return unused funds to the Academy of Physical Therapy Education. Funds cannot be used to attend conferences to disseminate results or for indirect costs or overhead.

Utilizing A Brief Training Module to Orient First Time Clinical Instructors to Clinical Expectations

November 2nd from 7:00-8:00 PM ET

Through discussion during Clinical Education Special Interest Group (PTA CE SIG) meetings, it was apparent that clinical instructors (CIs) serve as an extension of the academic faculty and that there is a lack of formally trained CIs. Studies have shown that there is not only a need for early and ongoing communication between academic faculty and CIs, but also a need for some training to guide novice CIs through the clinical expectations and processes. Authors have discussed that not all Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (CCIP) components are needed to meet the needs of today’s CI. The dilemma is that CIs are expected to have minimum requirements and the CCIP program is voluntary, not mandatory. In order to close this gap between CI training and novice CI expectations, we developed a brief training module to guide novice CIs in the processes of orientation, feedback, student/site visit expectations, assessment tool use and grading, and the importance of unique exposures during the clinical experiences. Implementation of this training module is in its early stages. We intend to develop a future survey of CIs that will help to clarify and determine the usefulness and any modifications that may be needed to the training module.

CE SIG PERSPECTIVES FROM

CLINICAL EDUCATION SITES

Release of Unused Offered Clinical Education Slot Survey

The APTA Academy of Education Clinical Education Special Interest Group (CE SIG) has tasked a workgroup with determining appropriate timelines for physical therapy education programs across the country to release unused offered clinical education slots and inform clinical sites of those releases. The CE SIG is exploring if there is a recommended timeline and communication strategy for educational institutions to release unused offered clinical education slots that will benefit both the educational institutions and the clinical sites that offered clinical placements.

The purpose of this survey is to collect information from the physical therapy clinical education community specific to how programs manage and communicate unused offered clinical education slots from clinical education sites and perspectives from clinical education sites specific to unused slots. An offered clinical education slot is a clinical education experience that a facility or clinic reserves for a specific physical therapy program.

Please consider participation in this research study if you actively participate in the clinical education placement process in the following roles:

  • Site Coordinator of Clinical Education (SCCE)
  • Clinical Instructor (CI)
  • Director of Physical Therapy or Rehab Department
  • Clinic/Practice Manager
  • Clinic/Practice Owner

APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (CCIP) Level 2

The CCIP Level 2 course brings two constructs together in one professional development program that advances both clinical teaching and best practice when providing student clinical education. Using a case-based and applied approach to education, this program both applies and goes beyond the concepts of the structured and effective learning environment from the CCIP Level 1 course to allow participants to further develop their clinical teaching skills and construct a clinical curriculum. The program’s unique philosophy and design will enable clinical educators to achieve the best outcomes for student learning.
