Making a Difference in Our Communities

In a world that thrives on connection and support, giving back has become a cornerstone of societal progress. It's not just about charitable donations; it's about fostering a sense of community and responsibility. The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) is dedicated to giving back to the community through various initiatives by organizing community service projects and opportunities for training institute attendees. APPA works tirelessly to foster positive change, and through our efforts APPA has seen firsthand how acts of kindness can transform lives and strengthen bonds within communities. By dedicating time and resources to those in need, we not only uplift others but also enrich our own lives, creating a ripple effect of positivity and change. Every opportunity, big or small, builds a foundation of hope and unity, reminding us of the power we hold to make a difference.

During APPA's recent training institute in June, APPA collaborated with three organizations to make a positive impact on the Indianapolis, Indiana community.

Over 100 Blankets and Stuffed Animals Donated

APPA's Leadership Institute collaborated with the Delphi Police Department, located just an hour north of Indianapolis - this partnership underscores our commitment to community engagement and support, particularly for the most vulnerable members of our society - children.

Every day, Delphi officers respond to calls for service involving children, whether they are victims, witnesses to an incident, or simply present during a traffic stop. To help alleviate the trauma and stress these situations can cause, officers provide these children with stuffed animals or blankets. These small gestures serve as distractions from the immediate circumstances and help establish a rapport between the children and the officers.

The Delphi Police Department's initiative is a shining example of how community corrections professionals can make a profound impact through compassion and creativity. We were proud to highlight and support their efforts during our 49th Annual Training Institute.

25 Hygiene Bags and 25 Snack Bags Prepared for the Homeless

APPA's Board of Directors prepared hygiene and snack bags for Indianapolis' neighbors experiencing homelessness.

This unique opportunity was a partnership with Horizon House which serves as Central Indiana's champion, expert, and trusted leader in placing chronically homeless neighbors into permanent, safe, supportive housing so they can thrive.

There's still an opportunity to show your support through a monetary donation.

  • $25 pays for one hour of case management
  • $100 provides food to 25 people in their onsite program
  • $500 provides street outreach to 150 people

Over 200 Jars of Jelly, Peanut Butter, Mayonnaise and Mustard Donated

Recent training institute attendees participated in our Dennis Maloney Project by supporting Second Helpings. Second Helpings fights hunger in Central Indiana from every angle. They rescue food that would otherwise be thrown away, prepare it, deliver it to local nonprofits for free, and train people for careers in the culinary industry. Each year they deliver more than a million meals - many of them to kids and seniors.

APPA is proud to have joined in the fight against hunger.
