MARAD announces more than $703 million in BIL funding to improve port infrastructure and strengthen national supply chains

October 28, 2022 — The Maritime Administration (MARAD) has announced more than $703 million to fund 41 projects in 22 states and one territory that will improve port facilities through MARAD’s Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP). The funding, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and additional Congressional appropriations, will benefit coastal seaports, Great Lakes ports, and inland river ports, helping improve supply chain reliability through increased port capacity and resilience, more efficient operations, reduced port emissions, and new workforce opportunities. Grants range from $353,500 to more than $68 million. Grant awards include:

In early preparation for post-pandemic cruise travel, the 2022 Post-pandemic Cruise Industry Recovery and Development Forum makes a grand debut

October 27, 2022 — The 2022 Post-pandemic Cruise Industry Recovery and Development Forum commenced today (9/13) on the second floor of the Keelung Port East Passenger Terminal. The forum, organized by the Maritime and Port Bureau (MPB) of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), is co-hosted by the Tourism Bureau, Taiwan International Ports Corporation, Ltd., Keelung City Government, and Kaohsiung City Government and executed by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) of Taiwan. Deputy Minister Chi Wen-Jong of the MOTC, Mayor Lin Yu-Chang of Keelung City, Secretary-General Kuo Tien-Kuei of Kaohsiung City Government, Legislators Tsai Shih-Ying, Hung Mong-Kai and Chen Jiau-Hua of the Legislative Yuan as well as other distinguished guests were present to give remarks. The main theme of the forum is to prepare Taiwan for post-pandemic cruise industry recovery and local tourism development. Renowned experts of the global cruise industry from Australia, the Philippines, Japan, and South Korea have been invited to give keynote speeches during the forum, which is attended by over 150 members of industry, government and academia in the cruise-related sectors of Taiwan and abroad. 

Draft Westport Marina Modernization Plan available for review

October 26, 2022 — The Port of Grays Harbor’s Westport Marina is the hub of tribal, commercial, charter and recreational fishing on Washington’s Coast. Ranking 10th in the Nation for commercial seafood volume with more than 132 million pounds landed, and 19th in the nation for commercial seafood value landed at $71.5 million, the activities at the Westport Marina and its uplands support nearly 2,300 jobs and over $227 million in business revenue every year in rural Southwest Washington.

Port of Long Beach recognized for communications achievements

October 21, 2022 — The Port of Long Beach earned three Awards of Excellence – the equivalent of first-place trophies – from the American Association of Port Authorities for outstanding communications campaigns at the organization’s annual conference in Orlando, Fla. on Tuesday. The Port was recognized for achievements in the Special Events and Visual-Only Presentations categories judged by the AAPA, which represents more than 130 seaports in the United States, Canada and Latin America. Long Beach competed in a class composed of the larger seaports.

Port of Skagit purchases two hangars on Airport

October 19, 2022 — The Port of Skagit added to its holdings at Skagit Regional Airport with the purchase of two box hangars. Port Commission formally approved the acquisition of the aircraft hangars during a special meeting last Thursday. The two separate transactions will provide the Port with nearly 14,000 square feet of additional publicly-owned hangar space along Flightline Road, adjacent to the northwest apron off the main runway. These strategic purchases align with the Port’s Airport Master Plan, which focusses on general and business aviation growth at Skagit Regional Airport.

Port Commissioner Rafael Castellanos named Latino Leader of Influence

October 12, 2022 — Port of San Diego Commissioner Rafael Castellanos has been named one of the Top 50 Latino Leaders of Influence 2022 by the San Diego Business Journal and the San Diego County Imperial Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Commissioner Castellanos will be honored during a ceremony being held at The University Club in San Diego on October 11, 2022. Commissioner Castellanos has served on the Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners since 2013 as an appointee of the San Diego City Council. He served as Chairman in 2018 and is slated to serve as Chairman again in 2023. Additionally, Commissioner Castellanos is a partner with the law firm Solomon Minton Cardinal Doyle & Smith LLP, specializing in commercial real estate and business transactional law.

Port of Guam awarded $5.7 million in federal infrastructure funds

October 12, 2022 — The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) awarded Guam $5.7 million in grants under the America’s Marine Highway Program (AMHP). The funding in this program helps expand marine highway services on our nation’s navigable waterways to reduce congestion, alleviate supply chain bottlenecks, and move goods more quickly from ships to shelves. “Our progress at the Port continues with this latest award of federal funds that will be used to continue our efforts modernize and transform our world-class gateway,” said Port Authority of Guam General Manager Rory J. Respicio. “This work being done is in line with Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio’s commitment to modernize our Port as the harbor of all things coming to Guam.”

Port of Columbia County planning $4 million Scappoose Bay Marina project

October 7, 2022 — Scappoose Bay Marina is one of the top tourist destinations in Columbia County, often seeing over 2,000 visitors on a summer weekend. To create a better experience for both motorized and non-motorized boaters at the marina, the Port is planning a major renovation. Planned improvements include replacing the boat ramp and creating a new kayak unloading and staging area away from the primary boat launch.
