In addition to Association business, the Association of Pacific Ports is very pleased to announce the following special presentation:
Port and Regional Trade Competitiveness
in an Emerging Post COVID World
Shifting economic conditions, customer expectations, the emergence of new technologies and environmental regulations are constant pressures facing ports and their customers. Moreover, confronting logistics and transportation challenges is required for increased port and regional trade competitiveness. During this time of heightened uncertainty and renewed optimism, the Association of Pacific Ports has invited a panel of industry experts to facilitate a guided discussion that offers insights into navigating the currents in a rapidly changing post COVID world.
The session will provide an overview of West Coast maritime cargo trends before highlighting challenges and opportunities for major ports and competing gateways as well as regionally significant ports.

Ms. Hanh D. Le-Griffin (Ph.D.). is Director, Ports and Marine Terminals for Hatch Engineering and is also an Adjunct Associate Professor Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering University of Southern California. At Hatch, she directs and delivers marine terminal and port master planning and development projects in North America and leads international marine terminal technical expertise training and integration.

Philip Davies (MA) is a transportation economist with over thirty-five years of experience in market research, freight planning, and intercity passenger transportation. Phil specialties include drayage, port operations, goods movement and land use, intermodal facilities and shortline railways, and economic analysis and program review projects encompassing transportation economics, logistics, social impacts, environmental issues and technology.

Liebherr Rostock reaches milestone in manufactured and delivered maritime cranes
July 6, 2021 — Slowly, ship cranes on the heavy-lift vessel BBC-Russia raise the new machine over the quay edge. The LHM 550 is one of two Liebherr mobile harbour cranes that will, in a few hours, begin the 5,500-kilometre journey to Ghana. On receiving their new machines, the West African Port of Tema is expanding its fleet of cranes for container handling. This delivery marks the eighth mobile harbour crane from Rostock to the port operator: Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

Matson launches China California Express, seasonal expedited service to Oakland

Taiwan’s Port Bureau hosts APEC maritime expert group meeting to focus on recover of cruise
July 1, 2021 — The Port and Port Bureau of the Ministry of Communications hosted the APEC TPT-WG Maritime Expert Group (MEG) key theme meeting on June 30, and invited more than 100 participants from international organizations and APEC maritime experts to share and exchange views on the cruise industry of various countries under the COVID-19 epidemic. The current situation, and policies and measures to restart the cruise industry after the epidemic.

Port of Newport Commissioners sworn in at monthly meeting
July 1, 2021 — Three Port Commissioners took the oath of office at the Port of Newport June meeting on Monday after being retained by voters in the most recent election cycle. Commissioners Jeff Lackey, Gil Sylvia, and Kelley Retherford all vowed to honestly and faithfully discharge their duties as Port Commissioners, with Lackey and Retherford serving additional four-year terms and Sylvia serving the final two years of an unexpired term.

Port of Grays Harbor receives Creative Partnership Award from WPPA
June 30, 2021 — At its Spring Meeting, the Washington Public Ports Association (WPPA) awarded the Port of Grays Harbor the 2021 Creative Partnership Award for their community collaboration in establishing a mass vaccination site in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Port of Long Beach celebrates 110th birthday
June 29, 2021 — The Port of Long Beach marked its 110th anniversary with a heartfelt message from Executive Director Mario Cordero thanking employees for all they do to make Long Beach live up to its motto as the Port of Choice. “Our efforts and the work of the generations before us have built what was once slough and marshlands into a 12-square-mile, modern gateway of commerce between the United States and East Asia.”

Port Alberni Port Authority and San Group Inc. announce operational transition date
June 28, 2021 — As announced on June 3, 2021, the Port Alberni Port Authority (PAPA) and San Group Incorporated (San Group) reached an agreement to transition the operation of PAPA’s Port Alberni Shipping Terminals Berth 3 dock and adjacent land facilities to the company. Both PAPA and San Group are pleased to announce the transition will officially commence July 1, 2021.

Port of San Diego to replenish sand at Kellogg Beach
June 28, 2021 — To help protect Kellogg Beach from natural erosion, the Port of San Diego will be replenishing sand at the beach beginning on or shortly after Tuesday, July 6. The work is anticipated to be completed in two to three weeks. Approximately 2,200 cubic yards of natural sand will be placed on the beach between Kellogg Street and McCall Street. The Port placed 2,000 cubic yards of sand on the beach in June 2020.

Port of Hueneme celebrates completion of deepening project
June 28, 2021 — Port of Hueneme made history celebrating the completion of its deepening project, a project in the works for over almost two decades. The Port can now proclaim a harbor depth of 40 feet. Joining Port officials was Colonel Julie A. Balten, Commander and District Engineer of the Los Angeles District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Many accolades were given to Congresswoman Julia Brownley for her steadfast commitment to secure approximately $20M in federal funds for dredging projects. Also in attendance were Port customers, contractors, the Navy and local, state and federal officials.

Port of Taichung asset vitalization initiative attracts Siemens Gamesa
June 25, 2021 — The Port of Taichung is committed to advancing national policy efforts to stimulate growth and domestic-industry involvement in the wind-energy sector and to developing the port as a primary homeport for offshore wind-farm development and support operations. As part of this effort, the Port of Taichung enacted an asset vitalization initiative to increase the office / administration space available to port businesses involved in offshore wind-power generation, which are critical to helping the nation achieve the goal of being nuclear-power free by 2025.

Port of Stockton publishes white paper on sustainable future
June 25, 2021 — Change is inevitable and often messy. Much like a large ship, it’s very difficult to redirect a large organization or ecosystem. California’s Ports are among the largest ecosystems currently changing direction – from reliance on fossil fuels to clean, zero-emission equipment powered by renewable energy. The Port of Stockton has already transitioned many pieces of equipment to new zero-emission technologies, including one of North America’s first battery-electric locomotive railcar movers. But that’s not far enough for Port of Stockton Environmental & Public Affairs Director, Jeff Wingfield. He has a personal goal to get the Port to completely zero emissions.

Port of Keelung enhances Public Container Wharf Facilities, further streamlining container yard services
June 25, 2021 — To further improve the quality and efficiency of its container yard services, this year (2021) the Port of Keelung, TIPC has scheduled maintenance and repair work on two container cranes. Work on BC-253 at West Wharf No. 25 was completed on April 20th. Work on BC-262 at West Wharf No. 26 is ongoing and scheduled to be completed by September 30th. The reintroduced container cranes will increase significantly the speed, reliability, and efficiency of container handling operations.

Port of Kaohsiung wins IAPH 2021 Award for Best Resilient Physical Infrastructure
June 25, 2021 — The Port of Kaohsiung has been named the honored recipient of the 2021 World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP) award for Resilient Physical Infrastructure. The WPSP award results were announced yesterday (June 24th) by the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH). This year, Port of Kaohsiung represented Taiwan’s international commercial port group in IAPH’s WPSP award program, submitting its Master Plan for Future Development and Construction (2017-2021) for consideration in the “Resilient Physical Infrastructure” category.
