AANHPI Heritage Month 2024

As May begins tomorrow, we come together to celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a month that holds special significance in our nation's history and cultural tapestry. May marks the commemoration of two pivotal events: the immigration of the first Japanese to America on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869, a monumental achievement made possible by the labor of many Chinese workers in the US.

Throughout history and to our present day, AANHPI leaders have played a critical role in shaping our nation's economic prosperity, technological advancements, and social and political landscapes. Their resourcefulness, innovation, and resilience in the face of cultural and systemic challenges have been instrumental in driving progress and positive change.

This year, we embrace the 2024 national AANHPI Heritage Month theme, "Advancing Leaders Through Innovation," as we honor the visionaries and pioneers who have paved the way for our community's growth and success. It is a time to honor their contributions and celebrate the rich achievements, culture, and history of Asians, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Let's unite in celebration as we reflect on our shared heritage and look ahead to a future filled with continued innovation, leadership, and prosperity for all.

Your Opinion Matters!

The Gallup Engagement Survey is an important opportunity to help drive real, positive change at UCSF. Last year as part of AANHPI Heritage Month 2023, the Asian American Pacific Islander Coalition (AAPIC) presented "Status of Asians and Pacific Islanders at UCSF," revealing disaggregated Gallup Survey Engagement data for the Asian diaspora. Presenters shed light on where workforce and leadership inequities persist and showed the spectrum of engagement among our communities, data that would not be available without the Engagement Survey. Voicing your opinion matters -- share your unique experience and help light the path to our collective growth and success!

To participate, check your email for your personalized UCSF Staff Engagement Survey link. Alternately, login to UCSF’s Gallup Access (via MyAccess). Survey ends on Friday, May 3rd.

Resources and Community Events

This AANHPI Heritage Month, I am re-reading Dr. Haunani-Kay Trask's book, Notes from a Native Daughter: Colonialism and Sovereignty in Hawaii. Professor Trask, who was a scholar, poet, and advocate for decolonization in Hawaii, writes in the book: "Our strength lies in our unity. We must come together, across tribal lines and boundaries, to fight for our collective rights."

From this text, I am not only reminded of APASA's role at UCSF as an organization that addresses issues of equality, fair labor practices, and diversity at UCSF across race and ethnic backgrounds, but I am also reflective on the importance of coalition-building within and across our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities. We hope that you may benefit from, learn through, and attend upcoming events as we celebrate throughout this month.

Resource and Recommendation Guides

TO LEARN MORE: Veritext Legal Solutions put together an incredible guide on AANHPI Heritage Month, including a list of historic sites, resources, and prominent people. Check out their page here.

ON CAMPUS: The Multicultural Resource Center's page includes fun facts, book reads, and educational resources that you can share with your team and community.

TO READ: Cathy Park Hong: Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning. This is one that I read, reread, and recommend to everyone who asks. Cathy Park Hong, faculty at UC Berkeley, presents these essays that weave her lived experiences with reflections on American race relations through an Asian American lens.

TO LISTEN: Sid Sriram: Tiny Desk Concert. Sid Sriram, an Indian R&B songwriter from Fremont, plays one of my favorite Tiny Desk concerts of all time. My personal favorite is "Dear Sahana," which starts around the 12 minute mark and cuts across music genres to deliver an incredibly smooth performance.

TO WATCH: Wong Fu Productions: Yappie. This mini web-series comedy highlights what it means to remodel the Model Minority myth by telling the story of someone who is realizing how important his Asian American identity is for the first time. This series features actors Simu Liu (from Kim's Convenience and Shang Chi) and Dante Basco (Pittsburg native who you might recognize either as Rufio from Hook or Prince Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender).

Representing at March's RCO Showcase

We loved meeting everyone at the inaugural Staff Registered Campus Organization Showcase featuring lion and dragon dancing and tunes by the GAPA Men's Chorus. We look forward to seeing you at one (or many) of our events in May.
