High Holidays 2024 / 5785

Dear CBI Family:

We are only a few weeks away from the start of the Jewish New Year 5785. It would be an understatement to say that this has been a challenging twelve months for the Jewish community both here and abroad. Some days it feels like the external landscape of Jewish life has changed in some fundamental ways. And perhaps it has. And yet the arrival of the High Holidays invites us to look ahead, and to prepare for the coming year by engaging once again with the spiritual themes of renewal, forgiveness, and the celebration of life.

Rabbi Ezra and I are looking forward to being with you in the coming month of holidays, and we are hoping that you’ll take advantage of the many different opportunities to “do Jewish” with us and to experience the warm embrace of CBI’s Jewish community.

If you are NOT A MEMBER OF CBI, please know that you and your family are warmly invited to join any of CBI's High Holiday services and programs - all we ask is that you let us know that you will be attending.

Perhaps you’ll join us on the last Saturday night of the Jewish year for our Selichot film and discussion. Or you’ll bring you shofar to our “Tashlikh and Tailgate” following services on the first day of Rosh Hashanah. Or that you’ll add your voice to the heartfelt prayers of our community as we gather on Yom Kippur. Or that you’ll choose one of the many events taking place during Sukkot to be with us in our transformed courtyard.

Above all, I want to wish you and your loved ones a year of good health, of peace and of new beginnings.

Shanah Tova U’metukah!

May you be inscribed for a sweet New Year.

Rabbi Tom Gutherz

Ritual Practice Committee Is Seeking Volunteers

Dear Fellow Congregants:

Before you know it the High Holidays will be here. The Ritual Practice committee has been planning for the multiple services and the logistics of moving between CBI and Trinity Church. The committee is comprised of volunteers and we are always looking for additional help during the holidays. Please consider the following volunteer opportunities:

  • Helping to set up and place books on seats starting 12:30 - 1:00 pm on Erev Rosh Hashanah (Wednesday, October 2) and Kol Nidre (Friday, October 11) at Trinity Presbyterian Church
  • Policing your space at and placing the machzor (prayer book) and handouts on your seat after the services at Trinity Church on Erev Rosh Hashanah and Kol Nidre.
  • Return your machzor to the rear of the Church after Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Services.
  • Please consider joining the Ritual Practice Committee. Please contact Sandy Schustek for further information.

Please remember to be early for Kol Nidre since doors to the sanctuary will be closed for the chanting of the Kol Nidre prayer. Let me be among the first to wish everyone a very happy, healthy, and sweet new year.

Win/Win: Support CBI And Dedicate A Prayer Book

A few years ago Congregation Beth Israel purchased the High Holiday machzor Mishkan Hanefesh, for use on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This new prayer book is full of beautiful poetry and spiritual reflections that enhance our prayer experience. Please consider helping CBI defray the cost of these new machzorim by purchasing a set for personal use or by dedicating a prayer book to the memory of a loved one. The cost of the set is $36. Please send this order form to Office Manager Raya Cantor.
