ALIGN'S June Edition of "Reconciliation Talks" by ALIGN's Indigenous Consultant Tanya Tourangeau

Honouring National Indigenous Heritage Month: Building Stronger Child Welfare Systems Together June 2024

At ALIGN Association of Community Services, we recognize that the path to Reconciliation and improved child welfare for Indigenous communities is a shared journey that requires collaboration, mutual learning, and respect. Following the introduction of The Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children, youth and families (Bill C92), it is imperative that non-Indigenous agencies understand the importance of working alongside Indigenous communities to ensure the effective implementation of this transformative legislation.

The Act under Bill C92 represents a significant shift in child welfare, emphasizing the rights of Indigenous communities to self-determination and jurisdiction over child wellbeing services. Alberta’s government is investing $22 million over three years to help foster, kinship and other caregivers look after young people in government care. To make life more affordable for foster and kinship caregivers and respond to their strong advocacy, Alberta is adjusting various caregiver rates, effective June 1. This will benefit almost 7,000 caregivers across the province and the 10,000 children, youth and young adults they care for and ensure they can continue to provide stable and loving homes for vulnerable children and youth who need a safe place to stay. Families who adopt or become private guardians of children in government care will also be positively impacted by these changes.
