It was wonderful to see so many of you at our September Regular Meeting and to welcome four new members to our chapter. Please remember that you are always welcome to bring a guest to any of our Regular Meetings. The October 11 Meeting at Mid Pacific Country Club is the next opportunity to do so. Another great time to introduce a friend to Assistance League of Hawaii is during our
Thrift Shop Christmas Work Party, scheduled for Sunday, October 29. See more about both of these events in the Hospitality article and Thrift Shop article.
Thanks to all who made their donations during our Kokua with Aloha Kala (KWAK) fundraiser at Foodland Markets during September. This is our only fundraising event of the year, and its success means more funds being used to help Hawaii's keiki. We will have the final figures from this soon.
The National Assistance League Conference was a great success, with ten of our members in attendance. They have returned with new knowledge and ideas and will be sharing some of what they learned at the October Regular Meeting.

Our philanthropic programs are the reason for our existence. There are many opportunities to get involved in our programs during the month of October. Please read each program chairman's article to find out how you can help.
Remember that our Thrift Shop is our main source of funding for all of our programs. Please help out there, either upstairs or downstairs, whenever you can. Ask your friends to come by and shop or make donations of merchandise. Know someone who is moving or downsizing? Suggest that they donate their cast-offs to us. "One man's trash is another man's treasure." Don't we know it!!!

In August, we were happy to welcome
Gloria McGehee-Koel who was born and raised here, then moved to California. She was a principal before retiring and is familiar with Operation School Bell which has clothed many of her students. She can be reached at: (805) 441-1898 and email:

Gloria's enthusiasm spread to her sister, Carol Hasegawa, who also joined us in August. Carol worked as a librarian for 13 years before becoming an administrator at the Dept. Of Education. Both Gloria and Carol enjoy working with students directly so are looking forward to the many opportunities to volunteer at ALH. They have already started helping LaVonne Holmberg with the Pu'uhale library and checked in students at the recent Operation School Bell In-Store Event. What a great addition to our ALH membership!

The ALH Regular Meeting will be on October 11, 2017 at the Mid Pacific Country Club.
Ronnie Wassill is our member host to the club. The meeting will begin at 10.30 a. m.
The lunch price is $25.00 per person.
The menu options include:
1. Chopped Hawaiian Shrimp Salad
2. Loaded Chicken Quesadilla with Guacamole, Sour Cream and Salsa.
3. Club Sandwich (Junior) with Curly Fries
The salad or quesadilla can be made vegetarian, if requested in advance.
IF you did not sign the advance RSVP during the September Regular Meeting, please RSVP with menu choice on or before October 5, 2017. Final orders must be confirmed with the Mid Pacific Country Club on October 6, 2017.
Payment is at the door with cash or a check payable to Assistance League of Hawaii. We are unable to accept credit cards at the lunches.

I
n August we received a very generous donation from the George Mason Foundation, of $15,000. Through the stewardship of Dot Mason, we have received, since 2004, well over $125,000 from this foundation. Mahalo, Dot!
Last year at this time I informed you that our mortgage was down to around $260,000. Well now, good ALH members, I inform you that our mortgage is $220,000! We are on our way to paying it off
completely by 2021, the 50th year of our organization.

We have two in-store shopping events scheduled. One, September 30th at Kapolei and the other, October 21st also at Kapolei. We can always use help and love to see new faces at these events! It's so exciting and rewarding to watch these children getting new clothing. Melanie Wogan coordinates the Malama Bears program. She received a very nice "Thank You" note from the Shriners for the bears she delivered to the Shriner's Hospital. The Imua Kokua Program assists children who are aging out of foster care by providing them with some of the household items they will require.
Pat Dixon coordinates this program. She has been contacted by a new coordinator for the foster care program who was very excited to hear that the Imua Kokua Program exists. We will discuss this development at our upcoming coordinator's meeting to see if any changes in the program need to be made.

HUGE
reserve of Christmas merchandise. Be the first to see the amazing collection of ornaments, garlands, wreaths, trees, figurines, greeting cards, lights, tableware, clothing, stockings, and everything in between, related to Christmas. (We've been saving this stuff all year!)
Come all day or just for an hour or two. No prior experience necessary. We need many, many elves to get this fun job done! Bring a friend along. Lunch and great companionship will be provided.

Operation Wildlife is beginning its fall season with our opening Endangered Species presentation on Monday September 25 at Lanikila Elementary school. The second day will be Wednesday September 27 with presentations at Koko Head Elementary and Star of the Sea schools. The first Neighbor Island presentation will be in Waimea with 8 schools in all. Gerry Migita and Miho Teipel will be flying over to the Big Island for that humongous effort!

We received $1,000 from the Visitor Industry Charity Walk. This is to be used by Operation School Bell for in-store events on O'ahu. Thanks to Mary Monohon for writing the application.
