At Assistance League of Hawaii, we always say, "There are many ways to contribute." Our programs rely on the help of our members to keep them operational. We need members to work at our Operation School Bell
® In-Store Shopping Events, such as the upcoming one on November 18, where students get to shop for new school clothes. Our Operation Wildlife program could certainly use more members to assist with endangered species presentations on Oahu and the Neighbor Islands. The We Care program needs help delivering our cuddly Malama Bears to hospitals, packing Lullaby Layettes for new babies, and shopping for household items for foster children transitioning to independence. Schools are always thrilled to have our Tutu Tutorial reading tutors helping young readers.
And how do we fund all of these programs? Primarily through our Thrift Shop, which is is always in need of help to sort, price and display merchandise or work with customers on the sales floor. Our Thrift Shop Christmas Work Party on Sunday, October 29, is a great opportunity to prepare our shop for holiday sales in a fun atmosphere. The more the merrier!
As you read the articles in this Newsletter, consider ways that you can "contribute" to Assistance League of Hawaii. The success of our organization relies on all of you.

At this year's National Conference, one of the Keynote Speakers, Suzanne Nosworthy, talked about being "Just a Volunteer". What I took away from her speech was "Volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless but because they are priceless." Each and every one of us are priceless volunteers and do a lot for the chapter.

We welcome two new members who joined us in October. They bring to us much needed knowledge and expertise in the technology and real property management fields.
1)
Mel Ah Ching - has been a Community Volunteer who has been checking all the camera equipment that is donated to our Thrift Shop. He is very knowledgeable about cameras, photography, videos, newsletters, writing, blogging, social media, and computers. Coni has already shown him how our newsletter is done and soon he'll be filling the Newsletter Editor position. WELCOME MEL!

Steven Nariyoshi - has been a licensed Real Estate Broker for over 30 years and is the owner/ripncipal broker of SN Realty, specializing in commercial property. He is still managing the business full-time, but may be able to help in property management for ALH. WELCOME STEVE !

Payment is at the door with cash or a check made payable to Assistance League of Hawaii. We are unable to accept credit cards at the meeting.

Every year chapter members donate thousands of hours in philanthropic programs, fundraising and administrative services. Based on statistical information from the US. Dept. of Labor, the value of one volunteer hour is calculated by taking the average hourly wage of "production and nonsupervisory employees on private, non-farm payrolls" and increasing the amount by 12% to estimate fringe benefits. This year, the value of one hour of YOUR WORK is $24.42. Last year it was $23.50.
Note: If you complete the yellow reimbursement form, and you still need to get your program chair's signature, located at the bottom of the form, put the form in the mail file for your program, so that it can be signed and is complete when it is put into the Treasurer's mail file. Program chairs, please check your mail file for forms to sign.

Sunday, October 29 - Christmas arrives at the Thrift Shop. The hands of many elves are necessary to sort the large number of bins and boxes of Christmas things we have. We will be at the Shop from 9:00-3:00; if you can only come for a short time, that will still be helpful.
Please remember that many of our members travel and have company during the holidays, so if you can fit in an extra day or two to work downstairs, it would be appreciated. Help is always needed upstairs.

The We Care Program project
coordinators for Malama Bears, Lullaby, Imua Kakou, Shriners Hospital, and Youth Outreach met on October 5 to review the plans for the upcoming year.
Dot Mason has done all the leg work for putting together a new project to provide assistance to the Domestic Violence Action Center. The project has been approved and will primarily provide bus passes and diapers to the Center.
National Assistance League has signed an agreement with Target for discount opportunities for Assistance League chapters. We will be checking into this to determine if this is something that would benefit our chapter.
Melanie Wogan has ordered 800 more Malama Bears - a very popular project. She can use some assistance in delivering them. Please contact her at 351-9156 if you can help.

The OWL ladies will be presenting at the following schools on Oahu in the near future: Le Jardin on October 30th, Daniel K Inouye School at Schofield Barracks on November 1st, and Mililani Iki Elementary on November 3rd.

Ronnie Wassill and Gerri Migita flew to Maui October 22-25 to present the Endangered Species presentation to schools on the Valley Isle.

Our final numbers from Kokua With Aloha Kala (KWAK) are as follows: There were 33 donors who gave a total of $4,328.00. Foodland added $765.20 and Western Union added $148.51 for a total received (by our President on Friday the Thirteenth) of $5,241.71. Think of it as allowing 104 keiki to buy new clothing at Walmart! (An additional $325 was donated by members after the Sept. 30th deadline, bringing the grand total to $5566.71) Mahalo to all who participated in this easy fundraiser.
