As I conclude my term as President, I want to say what an honor, a privilege and a pleasure it has been to serve as your leader over the past two years. In addition to all we achieved for the community, I've had the chance to solidify my belief about what a marvelous group of people are involved with ALH. I especially want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Board members, and Program and Committee Chairmen for leading ALH to another very successful year. We're all thinking about slowing down and taking a break this summer. But don't forget that the Thrift Shop continues to operate during the summer months, and is often busier than ever during this time. Our customers keep coming back for service-with-aloha and our great bargains. We'll continue to need your help over the summer, downstairs on the sales floor, and upstairs sorting, tagging and pricing merchandise. Even an hour or two makes a big difference, so please continue to help out. Congratulations and best wishes to our incoming Board members and Appointed Committee Chairmen who were installed at our May 10 meeting. We also honored members with the following awards:
Kolea Award
This award was created by our Hawaii chapter to honor members who are part-time residents in Hawaii, but volunteer here full-time when here on the Islands. This year we honored two members,
Betty Burrell, and
Pat Dixon for their contributions. Both Betty and Pat were sent certificates, and their names added to the Kolea Award plaque in the Ohana Room. (Left to right below: Betty Burrell and Pat Dixon)
Ada Edwards Laughlin Award
This award recognizes the role of the hardworking, behind the scenes member, "an unsung heroine". It was awarded to
Arden Moore for her multiple roles with ALH including Property Manager, pricing and display of jewelry, her work with Operation School Bell and Operation Wildlife, and this year she was also Chairman of the Nominations Committee. She's an enthusiastic promoter of ALH and generates many donations of goods to the Thrift Shop. Arden accomplishes a lot with quiet diplomacy and is our "unsung hero."
Martha Taylor Frensley Award
This award was established in 1997 to honor a member who demonstrated "abounding service with Assistance League of Hawaii".
Coni Holland received the award this year for the enthusiasm and leadership shown in her many roles at ALH. Coni took on the role of Treasurer, continues the role of Newsletter editor, along with participating in the Operation School Bell program, and working downstairs at the Thrift Shop. Coni brings a positive, generous spirit to all her activities and interactions and exemplifies the description of abounding service.

Thanks to all of you who came to our monthly Regular Meetings and dropped your tickets in the jar for a chance to win an all-expense-paid trip to the National Assistance League Conference in San Francisco this September. The names of the two lucky winners were drawn at our May Meeting. They are.........drum roll, please..........

Helen Taufa'asau. They will be joined by nine other ALH members to participate in the 3-day Conference, and they will all bring back ideas and information to share with our members.

Let me make my case:
1. I volunteered because I felt sorry for
Margie (Van Swearingen) standing up in every meeting asking for someone to take her place after her three+ years of being Treasurer herself. I had no experience at all (I'm a flight attendant!)
2. She patiently took me through every aspect of the job, and between the two of us, we caught my mistakes, corrected them, and I learned at every turn. If you know me at all, you must expect this next part:
Learning to be Treasurer at age 67, learning Quickbooks, and actually being Treasurer for a year (age 68, now) has been one of the most fun, satisfying, and delightful parts of my life! I am SO glad I raised my hand to volunteer, learn, and risk making mistakes. I wish I could do it for another three years, but, life moves on.
I will be gone in a few months, and Margie will NOT be returning to the position. We need someone smart and willing to step up. Any volunteers? I promise you will never regret it.

Our Program Chairs will be reporting their final numbers and it is obvious that we have spent more money, volunteer time, and compassion than ever before, and also helped more people than ever before. Exciting changes and improvements are coming our way, including measuring outcomes and easier administration of programs. Stay involved, and you will find
the satisfaction that comes from doing something for someone who can never repay you, but who will someday pass it on. Kindness is contagious.

We have had a busy year. All of our team members have participated in Oahu and Neighbor Island school programs. The last Oahu school for this fiscal year was Pu'uhale Elementary on May 25. Hana Elementary students had their day on May 23.
I thought I would share a few comments from the Grade 4 teachers about the program:
1. For the short time you were here, the program provided a lot of important information.
2. The Touch See Program was like a traveling museum.
3. What was the most beneficial: Knowledge of the presenters!
4. Please, please come back!!
5. Grade 4 student: "I actually learned something today!"
There are many more comments in the OWL drawer binder in the Ohana Room.
We have lots of fun, and lots of hard work goes into making this such a great program.

Thanks to those members who donated funds and walked at Charity Walk Oahu. Hopefully, we will be recipients of those funds in the fall for Operation School Bell. Before our next meeting in September, Foodland will begin hosting the "Give Aloha" campaign. Please be on the lookout and donate up to $249 to Assistance League of Hawaii, as KWAK is our primary fundraising venture.

Louise Frye and Jeffrey Portnoy of donations made in memory of their spouses.
Marti Frensley is recuperating at home after her hip surgery.
Lee Bassett is also recovering at home after her recent surgery.

$17,734 worth of goods to the community, serving 12,180 individuals. Many thanks to all those that work upstairs for their participation in the program and a special thanks to our new River of Life delivery person--
