What should be characterizing the future of IS/IT education?
How we educate is so different from how it was 30, 20, or even ten years ago. Our business is education, and education starts with the educator. The COVID disruption saw the global adoption of online learning delivery in a matter of weeks. Our educators rallied to document their experiences in a flurry of new research papers to help to understand and explain ‘what just happened?’ Responsiveness comes with the turf. Educators are used to dealing with new technology and applications, in different settings, with different expected outcomes and revelations. Bring it on, I say. We are ready for the future of IS/IT education because we are responsive.
What has been your involvement in SIGED?
2023 is my first year on the Board. I was encouraged by 2022 President Associate Professor Blooma John to consider a leadership position with SIGED. This year I am involved with the preparations for the SIGED 2023 conference. I get to work with international colleagues and find that distance is not a barrier to collaborating on ideas for improving the SIGED membership experience.
What is your vision for SIGED as President-elect?
I am using this year to watch how Vasoo Sylianou allows the SIGED Board (encompassing past, present, and emerging members) to introduce new ways of doing things. Let’s call it a responsive way. SIGED has again won another award for a high-performing SIG. Interestingly, many past Board members continue to attend SIGED meetings, a testament to the collegiality of the group who throw ideas into the ring, are happy to discuss the pros and cons and work together to achieve an outcome. Under President Vasso’s calm leadership, the Board is getting things done. For example, this year has seen the release of a monthly newsletter, community workshops, and broader involvement with other global AIS conferences across the globe. My role as President-elect is to support the President and maintain the momentum into next year. My vision is to encourage more AIS educator members to engage with SIGED.
How can someone get involved with SIGED operations?
There are many ways to get involved. Get in touch with any one of the amazing people on the Board. We are all approachable, and we may suggest one of the following ways for you to get involved: consider publishing your research in one of the conferences or tracks/workshops we organize; sign up as a reviewer; participate in the different activities of the SIGED; give us your feedback and suggestions for new initiatives that SIGED can be involved with.
