In Memoriam: John Fayko, AIA

John Fayko, passed away after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's and Lewy Body dementia, on October 12, 2022.

John began his architectural career in 1960 when he relocated from New York City to establish the Victor Gruen field office and design Midtown Plaza (the nation's first downtown enclosed mall.) After Midtown's completion, he stayed on in Rochester and established his own award-winning architectural practice. Some of his more memorable initiatives were the following: American Institute of Architects (AIA) Russian Accord, for which he

served as the individual responsible for renewing interest in the 1998 Accord between Russian and American architects.  He was the founder and first Chair of the Rochester AIA Intern Development Program; the founder and first chair of an organization of architects and other design professionals who provided pro bono service to individuals and groups who couldn't otherwise afford them. He was also the founder and first Chair of the AIA Explorer Scouts Program, in addition to establishing the Rochester Chapter of AIA of which he was President. He served on Design Award Juries for AIA of Central New York, as well as Potomac Valley and Long Island. John also served on the boards of the Al Sigl Center, Wood Library, and the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association. In 2009 he capped his legendary career with being the recipient of the James William Kideney Gold Medal Award, recognized as the highest award AIANYS can bestow on one of its members. Among his numerous other citations of merit are the 1990 Rochester Mayor Thomas Ryan award, for ongoing work on numerous buildings in the city, such as Northside Surgical Supply, Windsor Street Apartments, Hopper's Block, Al Sigl Epilepsy Association, Howitt House Independent Living Apartments, The Olive Tree restaurant and the Masucci house in Pittsford, with its indoor skating rink. He also spearheaded the design and implementation of Canandaigua's Kershaw Park Redevelopment. Asked which project he most enjoyed, he replied with that famous Fayko twinkle, that would be like picking your favorite child. John was truly a renaissance man of all seasons, humble and kind with a bracing sense of humor. Beloved by all who had the good fortune of knowing him. His pastimes included crossword puzzles, painting, and bird watching. His greatest happiness of all, was sitting on the deck of his Canandaigua Lake home with his loved ones and a Manhattan cocktail nearby. A celebration of John’s remarkable life will be held at a later date to be announced in 2023

AIA's New report outlines progress of 2030 Commitment

Since 2009, signatories of the 2030 Commitment create a sustainability action plan for their firm with the help of AIA resources and education, and are urged to report the predicted energy performance of all projects in their portfolio each year.  READ MORE
