As we begin a new year, AIA Ohio is actively working towards our vision of advancing the profession through advocacy, leadership and increasing value to members. A strategic planning retreat for members of the Board of Directors and key stakeholders was held in November to discuss what is working well, consider challenges and develop aspirations for AIA Ohio.

The Board of Directors of any organization has several very basic responsibilities. During the AIA Ohio Board orientation earlier this year, AIA Ohio Executive Vice President Kate Brunswick, CAE, Hon. AIA, outlined each of these for board members. The three most common responsibilities referenced include Duty of Care, Duty of Loyalty, and Duty of Obedience. Each of these addresses a task, or duty, that Board members need to adhere to. The fiduciary duty of the Board falls under the Duty of Care. Simply put, the Board is charged with using due diligence and good business judgment in their decision-making processes. Every Board, whether a 501(c)(6) or 501(c)(3) should follow these same basic guidelines.

In January, AIA Columbus hosted a lecture panel on the Rapid 5 Project, an initiative to develop an integrated open space network in Central Ohio that will prescribe how to best use our natural assets to benefit our economy, manage growth, provide access for recreation, education, and health, and preserve natural resources and environmental health. Five firms (AECOM, EDGE, MKSK, NBBJ, and REALM) studied ways to knit all five waterways in Franklin County (the Big Darby, Scioto River, Olentangy River, Alum Creek, and Big Walnut Creek) into a single cohesive system infused with exciting new ideas, expanded access, and community voices to benefit all of Central Ohio. In conjunction with the lecture, the Rapid 5 Project exhibit was on display at the Center for Architecture and Design. Learn more about the Rapid 5 Project: https://www.rapid5.org/
