As Summer comes to an end, I’m reminded of all that we have accomplished during the first eight months of the year in the presence of the ever changing and ongoing pandemic. Just when we all started to have confidence that the pandemic was waning, a new variant reminded us that we are not through to the other side. Although the year has been full of challenges outside our control, in some ways, the disruptions have been a blessing. We have reached more members, accomplished a multi-year legislative achievement, and connected our members and chapters in ways not conceived or possible in the pre-pandemic world.

The AIA Ohio Advocacy Program Planning Committee completed the last of its planned six-part series on July 21st. The final program, titled “Stories of Advocate Architects,” focused on the successful efforts of four (4) architects who contributed to, or were the catalyst for change in the profession or their community.

The AIA Ohio Foundation recently made a number of changes that are focused on strengthening the organization and positioning it for future growth. Meeting in late June, the Board of Trustees acted on several initiatives that have been on the organization’s radar throughout much of this past year.

The Foundation is pleased to announce that through a nearly six month-long selection process, the Board selected Dan Bickerstaff, AIA, from AIA Cleveland to fill one of the open trustee positions. There were many strong candidates, and all of the individuals nominated for a trustee position will be considered when the Board fills a second position later this fall. We congratulate Dan and welcome him to the Board.

“In June, AIA Columbus hosted their first in-person event since before the pandemic when members toured the new Columbus Crew Stadium in downtown Columbus. The tour was given by Daniel Mathur of the Columbus Architectural Studio. From the Nordecke supporters’ section to the owner’s suite to the field-level lounge, attendees got a taste of how fans at all levels would experience the game. The vibrancy and diversity of Columbus’ urban neighborhoods is reflected in the design throughout the stadium. The facility is designed to enhance fan engagement and inclusivity by blending the indoor and outdoor spaces. Plans are also in place to develop the surrounding area with mixed-use spaces and public infrastructure in order to revitalize the surrounding neighborhoods.”

As the AIA changes and adapts to member needs, so too do the many member knowledge communities, member groups and advisory groups. The small firm exchange (SFx) decided earlier this year to change the operation of the group from one made up of regional representatives to one that consists of a board of directors and state representatives. Although the change in many ways mirrors the changes in regions by membership at this year’s annual meeting, the SFx had made their decision much earlier.
