HERE+NOW: A House for the 21st Century
STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION
for the 2016-2017 academic year. What's the next...architectural practice?
This is the question the Young Architects Forum (YAF) is asking to lay the groundwork for YAF Summit 25 in early 2017. Every five years, the YAF hosts a summit to reevaluate the needs of young architects. The 2012 YAF Summit marked the twentieth anniversary of the group, bringing together more than 60 design professionals - including students, interns, AIA young architect members and non-members - to discuss top issues affecting young architects. Our focus for Summit 25 is centered on the Future of the Workforce. The outcomes of the summits assist in the development of the strategic plan for the YAF over the next five years. This survey will help our YAF Focus Group identify commonalities of the futuristic topics on Young Architects' minds by engaging a variety of AIA members, components, industry leaders, students, and collaterals. The result of the research will be a video presentation of findings and interviews identifying topics critical to understanding the future workforce of our profession.
This survey was developed by volunteers and does not represent the views of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) or its members.

Michigan State University releases ground-breaking guidebook on placemaking
Introduces four types of placemaking: Standard, Tactical, Creative and Strategic
|
East Lansing, MI
--The Land Policy Institute (LPI) at Michigan State University (MSU), in collaboration with the MIplace Partnership Initiative, announces the release of a guidebook titled Placemaking as an Economic Development Tool. It is the most comprehensive publication on placemaking to date, drawing from the best works available. This complete guide seeks to assist neighborhoods and communities with quickly reshaping their thinking and acting on how effective placemaking can greatly enhance community and economic development. It includes a summary of the research that supports placemaking, and identifies the related elements (good form, public engagement, planning processes and the regulatory tools) to achieve it. The guidebook then takes a deep dive into each of the four types of placemaking that can be used to create new and vibrant quality places, which are critical to talent attraction and retention.
