Tsivicos Honored as 2024 Person of the Year

Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos was honored by the PanCyprian Association of Florida as their 2024 Person of the Year at their annual banquet held on January 27th. The organization's Kyrenia II award was presented to him by PSEKA President Philip Christopher in honor of Savas' unrelenting fight for Justice for Cyprus over the past thirty years.

In accepting the award, Tsivicos spoke about fulfilling the AHEPA pillar of Civic Responsibility and encouraged those in attendance to get involved in order to advocate for Cyprus.

In addition to honoring the Supreme President, the PanCyprian Association of Florida also honored the Order of AHEPA as a whole for being the largest Greek American organization that has done more for Greece and Cyprus than anybody else.

Administration's F-16s Deal for Turkey an Outrage

Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos has issued the following statement:

The Biden administration’s notification to Congress of its plan to sell 40 F-16 fighter jets and modernization kits to Turkey, following Turkey’s ratification of Sweden’s accession to NATO, is an outrage. In addition, the swift, informal nod to the reported $23 billion deal by leaders of the House Foreign Affairs and Senate Foreign Relations Committees is a grave disappointment.

Once again, the United States has given in to Turkey, a failed NATO member. The United States rightfully sanctioned Turkey for its violation of U.S. law when it acquired Russian missile defense systems and correctly took measures to kick Turkey out of the F-35 program. The F-16 deal conflicts with these measures and compromises U.S. interests in the region. The deal is a blow to U.S. credibility when it comes to holding violators of U.S. and international laws accountable. Moreover, Turkey fails to uphold U.S. values and international standards on human rights, religious freedom, and freedom of the press, yet continues to be rewarded. Why should Turkey change its ways?

Greece to get 40 F-35 fighter jets from US, opposition asks for clarifications

The purchase of F-35 jet fighters had been a long-standing Greek request. The issue got politicised as, in parallel, Turkey was asking to upgrade its F-16 fleet from Washington. read more

Soccer fans in Greece will need cellphones to buy tickets in government crackdown on violence

Associated Press (January 29)

Soccer fans in Greece will have to use a state-run digital identification app on their cellphones to buy tickets for games after a security ban on supporters expires next month. The measure is part of a crackdown on sports-related violence that forced soccer clubs to close stadiums to fans for two months through Feb. 12. It was ordered after a police officer was shot with a flare during a fan riot in Athens last month and later died in the hospital from his injuries. read more

Power produced by renewables and hydroelectric plants accounted for 57% of Greece's energy mix last year, an 8.5% annual rise from 2022, IPTO said in a statement. read more
