AGASC Members Newsletter

Summer 2024

President's Letter

Welcome to summer. I would like to tell you what's going on with the Art Glass Association of Southern California for the rest of the year.

First, we have our General Meeting coming up on Saturday, July 13th at Tom Marosz’s Studio. We will be showing our video of AGASC artists working with glass, which will be shown at the Coronado Library during the run of our exhibition.

We have a great show coming to the Coronado Library starting in early July and it runs through the end of September. Make sure to go by and check it out. It is a wonderful space, and we will have 21 artists showing their work. More information is in the newsletter.

We also have our annual show this year in November. Each year we grow prouder of all the art pieces we show. This is only possible because of the collaboration we have among our members. Also, because we bring in master artists to share their knowledge with us through workshops and lectures.

We have a website that is there for all our latest news. I hope you check it out for upcoming events. You can access all our events, classes, and member resources through our website. We encourage you to explore the site and provide us with any feedback you may have. The site is AGASC.org.

Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. Our Board is here to support you and the art glass community in Southern California.

Best regards,

Jack Wade

President AGASC

Colortastic!! Glass Mosaic Assemblage

A Four Day Workshop By Kéké Cribbs and Alicia Lomné

Alicia Lomné and her mother Kéké Cribbs taught 9 students the techniques they are known for. The class was a unique approach to creating mosaic assemblages with pâte de verre and vitreous enamel components culminating into a final piece.

Alicia taught powdered glass design, color layering, and tamping techniques.

Kéké taught her distinctive methods of transferring drawings to glass. demonstrated the use of Tracing Black enamel for patterning, sgraffito, layering color, using firings to build color, and the use of alkyd paints.

The workshop was held at Tom Marosz’s studio from April 26th to 29th. On the final day of class, the aim was to create a glass mosaic assemblage. Not everyone was able to complete a full mosaic piece because of time restraints, but that didn’t matter because we all learned so much and we all had an exciting and fun time during the workshop. Both Kéké and Alicia were extraordinary teachers and a very funny comedy team. We were very fortunate to have them share their expertise.

Talk About Their Work and Share Their Stories

as Mother and Daughter Artists

After teaching their workshop, Kéké and Alicia gave a free presentation on April 29, at the Pacific Beach Public Library. Their talk was titled "Kéké Cribbs and Alicia Lomné, Mother Daughter Glass Artists." Both took turns describing their journey though life as artists.

Both Kéké and Alicia showed slides of their artwork and scenes from their adventurous lives. The event was well attended with about 25 or more people enthralled with their artistic journeys.

AGASC Takes a Road Trip to Coatings by Sandberg

Thirteen members and friends carpooled to Coatings by Sandberg on June 25, 2024. Nine were first-time visitors to CBS. We began the tour in the CBS lobby, better known as the Museum of Dichroic Glass. Everyone was oohing and aahing at the dichroic glass and picking out their favorite piece.

We then went into the production room. The disk washer was busy tying glass chains to a board that fit the wire circles for coating. Dana held up two cups of metal oxides and quartz and explained that an electronic beam is shot into the cups and the vapors float up in the vacuum chamber to produce the dichroic. They had glass in the chambers so the members could see the process in action. After that, we moved to another area, and she discussed the various colors and how they are produced from the metal oxides. Then she pulled back a cover over a table and said it was time to shop. So, everyone rushed to the tables.

We went to lunch at Rutabegorz, which everyone loved. After a not-so-quick stop at Hollander Glass with several first-timers, we headed home with lots of glass.

Glass Craft & Bead Expo in Las Vegas

This year's expo was back in full swing! Loads of great classes and lots of glass vendors and companies with all of their newest equipment and glass goodies to buy. If you are new to glass and have not made it to this annual show you must come next year. It is always held the last week of March or the first week of April. Just being able to compare kilns and products from so many manufacturers and shops is worth the trip. Krista Heron and Susan Hirsch worked in the Rayzist booth with Billy and Liz when they were not teaching classes that used the Rayzist techniques.

This Expo includes vendors in Lampworking, Fused, Stained, Mosaic Glass and more.
