Our election for this year has me as President again and Diana Griffin as our new Treasurer. We want to thank Jon Simpson for all the 13 years he worked as our Treasurer. He will still be working on the AGASC website and communications through eblasts so we can all be informed of the latest events. Then we have a new membership chairperson, Norma Marosz. She will be doing outreach to bring in new members as well as keeping current members current. We also want to thank Devora Safran who has been our Vice President for the past several years. She has decided to relocate and is resigning from the Board. We wish her all the best in her new adventure.
We have a few things already coming up this year. First, we are lucky to have a workshop being taught by Kéké Kribbs and Alicia Lomné. Also, we have an exhibition starting in July at the Coronado Library, which will run through September. The workshop is already filled but we will be sending out more information about the Coronado show soon.
It is going to be a good year and we are striving to make the AGASC even better. Thanks for being a part of or supporting us for another year.
Jack Wade

Pat Warren's
Studio Closing
(1502 Glassworks)
By the time you read this, Pat Warren will have closed her studio. She had to vacate because she was in the four-car garage of the Sefton Mansion and the mansion was to be sold. She put a call out through AGASC to have members come get stained glass free of charge, as much as they want. This is the kind of people that make up the AGASC. We had one member (Ginny Lovell) write in and say "Exceptional adventure at Pat's! Dug deep for lots of treasures! Great fun visiting with other rummaging glassies! Will be sad to see the glass scrapped. Hope people go. Bring gloves and a flashlight for irid (iridized) and texture searches in the clears."

Between the Lines
Stephen Edwards & John Luebtow
at Craft in America
Opening Reception 3/9/24, 3:00 - 5:00 PM
Show Dates 3/9/2024 - 5/25/2024
8415 W 3rd St, Los Angeles, CA 90048
This exhibition pairs the work of two long-standing, luminary glass sculptors, Stephen Edwards and John Luebtow. Insatiably curious about the process, both artists consistently push the boundaries of material exploration and technical development. Working in varying scales and sizes, they have each proven the adaptability for glass as a sculptural and expressive medium. For both artists, work begins and has largely emanated from the line, which defines their forms. Reading into their works and between the lines always unveils existential messages and added layers of philosophical and personal meaning.

Art Glass Guild
May Patio Sale & Show
May 11 & 12, 2024
| |
It is time again to begin planning for the May 11 & 12 Patio Sale.
Note that tables are free this year, but I’m going to first give out one per artist then I’ll give out the second… I know it’ll be much easier to not lug your tables, but I couldn’t come up with anything fairer. REMEMBER, FIRST COME FIRST SERVE.
Just before the sale, I will let you know if we can drive on the patio and what rules there may be this year. We will ask again as we get closer to the sale, but as of now, the answer is no. For an application contact Pati Fabian.

AGASC 42nd Annual Members’ Exhibition
By Jon Simpson
This past December 32 members brought 85 pieces of art glass to Gallery 21 for the exhibition. Having participated in the last 13 exhibitions, I am amazed at the quality of the art glass and how it gets better and better every year. This is confirmed by the judges, both this year and last year, saying that their job was much harder than anticipated due to the high quality of the artwork. The judges for last year’s exhibition were Ethan Stern, a glass blower who specializes in coldworking, and Josh Hershman, a glass caster, glass blower, and flame worker who specializes in casting cameras.
It truly does take a village to put on the exhibitions each year. Besides Krista Heron, the Show Chairperson, each of the members who enter the show has to volunteer for a job and work one day in Gallery 21. It takes five or six members to paint the pedestals, and another four or five to manage art intake. Then the show is installed, which includes lighting the artwork and putting up the judging labels by the hanging committee. Then the show is judged and the members working that day must put the ribbons on and change the labels to the final labels. At the reception, it takes another four or five members to set up the tents and put up the lighting. Krista or Devora Safran usually caters the reception. It takes another five or six members to carry the trays among the guests. The raffle tables usually have three or four members and the drinks table has at least two bartenders. When the show is over another two or three members are responsible for taking the pedestals and the glass cases and putting them away.
Turning to the sponsors and donors of the show, we could not have the exhibit if not for them. Our two sponsors of the show, Oceanside Glass & Tile (Pam Bartholomew), and Coatings by Sandberg (Dana Baldwin) helped make the exhibition a huge success with their large donations of glass. We want to thank them for their long-term commitment to the AGASC. These companies also donated to the show: Toyo (Steve Shupper), His Glassworks (Mark Bolick), Bullseye Glass (Mary Kay Nitchie Lodwick), Rayzist Photomask (Liz Haas), Cutting Edge Products/Red Hot Metal (Jeff Lindsay). The following glass artists donated their art glass to our auction: Davide Salvadore, Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen, Kari Minnick, Mathieu Grodet, and Evie Ault (donated several miniature bottles by Bertil Vallien).
Frank Varnell’s Celestial Intersections won 1st place in Sculpture and Best of Show. Robin Brailsford’s Hurricane Sharpie won 1st place in Wall Art. Jon Simpson’s Red/Dichroic Stringer Fan won 1st place in Vessels. Helen Munroe’s Water’s Edge won 1st place in Plates, Platters and Shallow Bowls. Jacob Barfield’s Infinity Pendant won 1st place in Wearable Art. Susan Hirsch’s Cosmic Cactus Connection won 1st place in Mixed Media. Linda Matlis’s Jungle Garden won 1st place in Novice. Bill Matulich’s Barbarlone won 1st place in Coatings by Sandberg. Susan Hirsch’s Artic Flow I won 1st place in Oceanside Glass & Tile Special. Tanner Miller’s The Happiness Project won 1st place in Oceanside Glass & Tile Emerging Artist. People’s Choice Award was won by Tom Marosz with his Baby Cassidy.
For a list of all the winners check out the “shows” page on the website. Most of the winning entries can be seen on the “members gallery” page on the website.

The first general meeting of the year was hosted by Tom and Norma Marosz at his studio in Spring Valley. Tom gave a great lecture on adhesives for glass. There were questions and Tom had very informative answers. Many of us struggle with understanding what adhesives are most effective to use for hanging and repair. The meeting followed with a financial update and discussion on what our members would like in the coming year for workshops, shows and tours.
After the meeting adjourned we enjoyed sharing food and good company.

AGASC Annual Holiday Party
For those of you that missed this event... well you missed an awesome party! Our annual party was postponed the week it was scheduled because our lovely hostess Krista Heron came down with a nasty case of RSV. It worked out by rescheduling in January as many people have such a busy December event calendar. We think the January date turned out so well it will now be the 'Start the year off with a bang' annual party. This party has been a costume event for many years after our first ugly sweater party. Our members really embrace the theme each year and come up with fabulous costumes to compete for best costume! This year's theme was "From a Galaxy Far, Far Away". There was an abundance of Trekers and Star Wars characters. We have done Casbah, Roaring 20's, 50s, 60/70's, Steampunk and Pajama party. Each year the competition is crazier! This year Ron won Best Men's as Princess Leia in drag, and Susan for glitzy Space Girl. Our resident mad scientist, Tom did a laser light show in the backyard. As always, our hostess Krista made a great meal and we all had fun in the gift and steal-a-gift exchange. Everyone was required to make their gift, not just glass.
