As you prepare for your trip to Honolulu and our Annual Meeting, we want to ensure that your experience is enjoyable and respectful. Hawaiʻi isn't simply a tourist spot; it's a region with diverse biocultural traditions and ecosystems that merit our highest regard and attention. With its deeply entrenched Indigenous culture, respecting Kānaka, or Native Hawaiian, traditions and customs is crucial when visiting. One meaningful way to honor the Kānaka Maoli during your stay and demonstrate your respect as a guest is: Immerse Yourself in the History.

Understanding the ability of a population to respond to disturbance, its resilience, is incredibly important in ecology and fisheries management. Many factors go into resilience, and this study explores how genetics can affect resilience in eastern Brook Trout populations and why genetics alone might not tell the whole story of a population's resilience.

Our community of fisheries professionals is remarkable. Every day, new discoveries are made, and management decisions are scrutinized to ensure that we have sustainable fisheries that benefit all. These singular achievements aggregate over one's career. On occasion, there is opportunity to celebrate those achievements and the individuals behind them. There is hardly a bigger stage than the Tyler Environmental Prize and, this year, two fisheries professionals—Daniel Pauly and Rashid Sumaila—were co-awarded that very prize.
|
Pauly writes, "Rashid Sumaila, my friend and colleague, and I shared the 2023 Tyler Prize. Although we worked together on many issues, we have received separate laudations. Mine mentioned that I contributed to creating a global 'knowledge infrastructure,' besides publishing on various items, such as 'shifting baselines.'"
|
Sumaila writes, "In 2023, I've been deeply honored to receive recognition for my modest contributions to advancing the cause of utilizing economics in the sustainable management of environmental resources, particularly for the benefit of future generations and our most vulnerable communities. The year commenced with the humbling acknowledgment of being named a corecipient of the prestigious 2023 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, culminating with the esteemed accolade of receiving the Prince Albert I Grand Medal for Science, and named one of 100 most influential Africans of 2023."

Many AFS members may know Mažeika Sullivan of Clemson University as a colleague from the Society for Freshwater Science and the Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies (CASS). Dr. Sullivan has also been instrumental to CASS policy efforts on the Clean Water Act and Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS). He is now facing a serious health challenge and a fundraiser has been started to assist his family.
