AFS joined a group of hunting, fishing, and conservation organizations in urging the Biden Administration to offer recommendations to address areas of concern with implementation of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Specifically, the groups are calling for enhanced federal agency coordination, increasing staff capacity, grant process improvements, expanded use of NEPA reviews, and more communication of conservation success stories.
AFS also joined other organizations in approaching the Department of Transportation about potential improvements to the National Culvert Removal, Replacement, and Restoration Grant Program. The groups called for changes to make the grants process more accessible to smaller community-based organizations and Tribes. In addition, because the intent of the Culvert Program is to benefit fish passage, design criteria including minimum fish passage requirements and hydraulic design methodology that incorporates climate influence on hydrology should be required as part of project design funded through the program.
