Membership Database Update

AFP is transitioning to a new membership database. What does that mean for you?

On March 7, AFP launched a new membership database. We are undergoing this transition to better serve you as a professional fundraiser and AFP member. To make this transition as seamless as possible for you, and to minimize any disruptions or frustration, please read through this list carefully.

Here’s what you need to know:

• If you have not logged in since March 6, 2023, or earlier, please reset your AFP member account password at https://portal.afpglobal.org.

Cora LaRussa, CFRE (she/her) joined the AFP-Vancouver Island board in 2021 as the Mentorship Chair, and currently serves as the Government Relations Chair. Cora has been working in fundraising for over a decade with experience in direct response, major and leadership gift solicitation, event and political fundraising, and non-profit management. She has worked in both small and large shops and is passionate about telling compelling stories to inspire donors.

Cora holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Victoria. She returned to her alma mater in 2016 to join the UVic Alumni

and Development team, where she is an Annual Giving Officer.

If it’s your goal to become a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE), don’t let the April 15 application deadline pass you by.

Submit your application by the deadline and you’ll have up to one year to sit for the exam. You’ll enjoy the flexibility to test when it works best for your schedule.

Our members always save 20% off the cost of CFRE certification. To enjoy the discount, select “Association of Fundraising Professionals” from the dropdown menu of organizations inside your CFRE application. The discount will be automatically applied.

Fundamentals of Fundraising

April 14th & 15th at the University of Victoria

AFP Vancouver Island Chapter is hosting the Fundamentals of Fundraising Course April 14-15, 2023!

This intensive program will provide an overview of skills, techniques and program components for individuals with up to 4 years of fundraising experience. Full participation in the AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Course is applicable for 16.0 points of CFRE Credit in Category 1.B – Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification.

Are Big Foot and Major Gifts Mere Legends?

April 26th @ 12:00 pm, via Zoom

Major gifts can often seem like Big Foot—there is a legend that they exist, other organizations seem to get large gifts, but there’s just not enough evidence that it’s real to you. According to Giving USA, individual donors comprise 75% of all philanthropy each and every year. Rarely do donors make major gifts as first-time contributions or to organizations they’ve just gotten to know.



This session explores three core truths to help you shape a multi-channel individual donor engagement plan that attracts, inspires, and retains donors at all levels from Annual Fund supporters to mid-level donors and ultimately major gifts investors.

Salary range is now required for AFP Vancouver Island job postings

In line with AFP Global and in order to promote gender and racial pay equity, we require that a salary range be included for all job postings. This will make negotiations easier for both employer and candidate, and will also help save time and resources for employers by ensuring that those who apply are candidates whose skills, experience and salary expectations align with the requirements of the role.



In addition, research has shown that posting the salary range increases the reach and attention ads receive by 30%.
