The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, together with the Cotuit Center for the Arts, announces the seventh year of their collaborative Seeing the Light winter art exhibit, showing now until February 22 at 4 pm!
 
This years winter art exhibit features 66 Cape Cod artists' interpretations of "seeing the light," both literally and figuratively. This unique, free exhibit aims to introduce kids to the work of artists from Cape Cod, while encouraging their own creativity by engaging in age-appropriate educational activities during their visit.

Our Executive Director's Upcoming Guest Speaker Appearance
 
The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod's Executive Director Kevin Howard, will appear as a guest speaker in the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce's 100 Years of Leadership Public Forum held at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel on February 22, 10 am - noon.

 

Kevin Howard is one of five leaders that was chosen to speak at the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce's Free Public Forum,"Focused On Our Future." The event will bring regional leaders together for a forum on future challenges and opportunities for our region. The confirmed panelists will cover the following topics: Business, Education, Civic Life, Culture and Environment.

Seventh Annual Creative Collaborative Conference  


The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod is pleased to announce the Seventh Annual Creative Collaborative Conference at the Cape Codder Resort & Spa in Hyannis on March 24 from 7:30 am - 3 pm.

Barnstable Town Hall's Concluding & Upcoming Artwork on Loan Displays
 
The Artwork on Loan program provides a venue for local artists to display their work. Visitors who use the meeting rooms will discover an inviting and attractive environment and have an opportunity to learn about some of the Cape's local artists.
 
Arts of Palm works of art by Collen Corson will be on display in the Selectmen's Conference Room & Town Hall Hearing Room (located on the 2nd floor) in Barnstable Town Hall, now - February 21: An artist and designer from Falmouth, Colleen spends many months in the Florida Keys each year. In addition to designing home accessories, she creates fish entirely from palm tree materials she collects. Using the coconut seed pods she is able to create sea creatures of all shapes and sizes.
Works of photographer Sarah Colvin Nelson with be on display in the Selectmen's Conference Room & Town Hall Hearing Room (located on the 2nd floor) in Barnstable Town Hall, February 21 - April 4: Sarah is hobbyist photographer who has always been intrigued with light. The ability to capture the beauty of the Cape is special - and she is always seeking out new locations and new perspectives of Cape Cod.   • Origins of Existence by Tessa D'Agostino a special installation on display in the Vault: This floor to ceiling art installation on display in the Vault, will lead viewers through a branch woven, tunneled entrance into a warmly lit, cave-like experience. With this lighted branch-woven sculpture in the center of the room, it will produce branching shadows that will dance upon the walls and ceiling in addition to the guests that enter. Brewster Ladies' Library Presents The Dream Project

Paul Tougas Art Show, now - February 28: The Dream Project is a show of impressionistic paintings and unconscious sketches. Tougas has the dream to elevate awareness and support of the Fountain House Clubhouse model, which established standards to help people with mental illness stay out of hospitals and achieve their goals. All proceeds from the sale will go to the International Coalition of Clubhouse Development, which establishes these clubhouses around the world.

Community Art Show, March 1 - 31 with a Meet the Artist Reception on March 8, 3 - 5 pm: Come celebrate the artwork of our community. Mixed media works by Brewster artists will be on display in the library auditorium.

Cape Cod Museum of Art New Exhibitions

 

Salvatore Del Deo: Faces and Figures 1969-2012, now - March 9, with a Gallery Talk by the artist on February 27, 2pm: This Spring marks the completion of artist Salvatore Del Deo's sixth decade as a year-round Provincetown resident, where he has repeatedly played a major leadership role in the town's art community. For all this time he's masterfully painted virtually every aspect of his environs at the Cape's end, including dunes, wharves, fish and lighthouses. But his portraits and figurative works are especially compelling.

 

All About sEVEn: A Multimedia Exhibit by 49 Cape Women Artists, now - March 30 with an upcoming Opening Reception on March 1, 3 - 5 pm: Many people consider seven a lucky - or even magical - number. There are seven days in the week, seven continents, seven notes in the musical scale and seven colors in the rainbow. This exhibition will explore seven themes related to the number seven, each as interpreted by seven female artists - for a grand total of 49 participants! Each group of seven artists chose their own theme, with most eschewing the more obvious options. The themes they elected to pursue are as follows: Spectrum, Elements, Pleiades, Seven Deadly Sins...?, Intentions, Seven Generations, and Formal 7.

 

Mikhail Zakin: Salt Glazed Pottery, now - March 9: New Jersey potter Mikhail Zakin taught ceramics at Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill from its inception in the early 1970s until 12 days before she passed on September 9, 2012. Ninety-two years old at the time, she was anticipating her salt-glazes pottery at the CCMOA this winter. The show will go on as scheduled, serving as a testament to the creativity of an exceptionally vibrant woman.

Naturescape Gallery 
at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History
 
Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents a Naturescape Gallery with original artwork from the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School, now - March 14 from 11 am - 3 pm.

The students have been experimenting with their own version of a Mexican traditional substance called Amate, made from the pulp of the Fig and Mulberry trees. Using their own substances of brown craft paper and India ink, students considered the animals, plant life and Cape Cod's environment to create their original tempera paintings inspired by the Amate tradition. These paintings reflect their creative efforts to select birds, fish, reptiles and plants and interpreting them by using bold colors. This event is free with Museum Admission.

Wellfleet Public Library Presents A United February Show
 
Wellfleet Public Library presents a United art show featuring work by Latham Centers Students & Adult Residents for the entire month of February.
 
The colorful show features some 40 works by students of Latham School in Brewster, and adult residents of Latham who live throughout Cape Cod. The exhibiting student artists attend school year-round at Latham's residential campus while Latham adults reside in Cape homes close to work sites, day habilitation programs and other activities. United, marks the first time that Latham students and adult residents have collaborated on a joint art show. The faculty and staff for students ages 8 - 22 took the opportunity to create art for the Wellfleet show centered upon the themes of Black History Month, Presidents' Day and Valentine's Day.

Extended Show at the Media Center Featuring Illustrations by Ned Sonntag
 
The Cape Cod Media Center announces a Heads-Up for an Ongoing Show featuring illustration work by artist Ned Sonntag, extended through the end of February.
 
Ned is best known as the premiere Betty Boop illustrator for the King Features/Fleischer Studios Hearst Licensing Department. However, this exhibit features 43 years worth of Ned's other cartoons, comic strips and illustrations taken from magazines and websites. Pen & ink, watercolor/Prisma, acrylic painting and even a few digital printouts, give the viewers a taste of various media. The subject/topic of these works stretch back to the mid-70s and the last days of the Underground Press.

17th Annual Photography Contest Showing Now at the Creative Arts Center!

The 17th Annual Photography Contest announces award-winners & will be on display at the Creative Arts Center throughout the month of February.
 
The Cape Cod View Finders Camera Club held a reception on February 2, where they awarded cash prizes and ribbons the winners. The show includes 144 entires from 82 non-club members, representing 13 Cape locations and 10 off-Cape locations.

Book Talk and Signing: The Old Cape House by Barbara Eppich Struna on February 23, 1 0 2 pm: The Old Cape House is historical fiction that follows two Cape Cod woman centuries apart. The author uses alternating chapters between the 18th and 21st centuries, to unfold a mystery that has had the old salts of Cape Cod guessing for almost 300 years.

Genealogy: Cape Cod & Beyond, February 24, 1 - 2:30 pm: David Martin, PhD, President of the Cape Cod Genealogy Society, and Professor Emeritus at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. and resident of Marston Mills, introduces this brand new lecture series on local roots. Professor Martin will present an overview and current trends of genealogy, including what tools are needed and where to find them. The importance of documenting evidence and how to create your own pedigree will also be discussed.
 
Wordsworth and Coleridge: Lyrical Ballads in Snow Library's Trustees' Roomnow - March 24, 1 - 2:30 pm: This book of 1798 includes some of the poets' best and most innovative work, making it a landmark in British literature. Talk of the Town Speaker Series: The War of 1812 Featured Lecture
 
The Talk of the Town Speaker Series sponsored by the Sandwich 375 Committee presents The War of 1812 Lecture by Jim Coogan at the Sandwich Glass Museum's Hirschmann Theater on February 26, 7 pm.

Two centuries ago the United States and Great Britain were engaged in war. Some Americans called it the "second war for independence." Coogan's talk will look at how the citizens of Sandwich experienced the war and will review the significant happenings in 1814 as they affected Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. Coogan, who among other things writes a column and blog for the Cape Cod Times, and enjoys talking about the War of 1812.

14th Annual Poetry and Chili Fest at Cotuit Center for the Arts
 
Cotuit Center for the Arts announces their 14th Annual Poetry and Chili Fest on March 1, 6 pm.

Beat the winter blues with an evening of great chili and cornbread, talented local poets, ice cold Cape Cod Beer, frosty Margaritas, and dancing to R&B/Rock music of the Catbirds, featuring Chandler Travis on bass and vocals, Steve Wood on vocals and guitar, Dinty Child on mandocello, guitar, accordion, and vocals and Rikki Bates on drums. 

The evening will begin with the Chili and Cornbread Contest from 6 - 7 pm. Samples of an eclectic array of chili and conbread recupes are included in the price of admission. Cooks must register in advance at ArtsOnTheCape.org and must read the USDA's guidelines on Cooking for Groups. Prizes will be awarded for Best Chili, Best Cornbread and Best Decorated Station. Any professional chefs or restaurant who participate will not be eligible for prizes.

At 6:45 pm the poetry portion of the event will begin with an open mic session. Sign up for the open mic starting at 5:30 the day of the event - this is limited to the first 15 people who sign up! There is no advance sign up, and each poet has a time limit of 3 minutes.

After the open mic, around 7:30 pm, the featured poets take the stage, led by acclaimed Cape Cod poet Christine Rathbun Ernst.

Friends of Snow Library Continues Who's Who on Cape Cod

Lifetime Learning, Friends of Snow Library presents Who's Who on Cape Cod from now - March 14, 1 - 2:30 pm.
 
This week Mindy Todd, host and producer of The Point on WCAI, brings more than 30 years of experience on radio and television, covering nearly all aspects of broadcasting. Her depth of knowledge gained as a news anchor and reporter, talk show host, traffic and ski reporter will all contribute to a fascinating afternoon. Everyone knows she is a great listener, so get your questions ready!

Woods Hole Theater Company Presents Alice in Wonderland

Woods Hole Theater Company presents a special winter break production of Alice in Wonderland at the Woods Hole Community Hall on February 20 at 7 pm, February 22 at 4 pm, and February 23 at 2 pm.
 
This performance was written by Lewis Carroll, Adapted by Holly Erin McCarthy, and Directed by Lisa Jo Rudy. This performance marks Rudy's first time directing with the theater. This is also the first time in several years that the WHTC has done a family production on our main stage. Rudy has assembled a cast of approximately 40 actors and musicians, ranging in ages from 6 - 73 year-olds.

Eventide Arts Family Theatre presents Tom Sawyer, A Play with Music at the Gertrude Lawrence Stage inside Dennis Union Church from now - February 23.
 
Direction by Kay DeFord and Musical Direction by Glenn Starner-Tate, bring this great American story to the stage that has been enjoyed by children and adults. Touching, funny, and always engrossing, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is, and probably always will be, a much beloved American classic. In this production, Tom Sawyer's greatest exploits, along with his best friend Huckleberry Finn and love interest Becky Thatcher, are plucked from the book and set delightfully on stage. Mark Twain himself travels forward in time to narrate this production that features a musical accompaniment of classic American music.

Cape Cod Museum of Art continues their Music & More program with the following performances:
 
Bijou in the Swing with Gypsy Jazz, February 23 at 2:30 pm: Bijou will present a concert of Gypsy jazz, also known as Gypsy swing or hot club jazz - in the musical style originated by guitarist Jean "Django" Reinhardt in the 1930s. The group's members are Lary Chaplan on violin, Doug Large on guitar and Gary Gross on guitar.

Brazilian Jazz on Tap at Art Museum on March 9, 2:30 pm: Vocalist/guitarist Livio Freitas will be joined by Jakstoni Dias on bass and Bart Weisman on drums to present a concert of Brazilian jazz. Freitas, who now lives in Falmouth, but grew up in Rio de Janeiro style, has a style that derives from Brazilian dances, particularly the samba, as well as more contemporary rhythms.

If Nothing Changes will open in the Black Box Theater on April 10 - 27. Writer/Director Richard Martin is seeking actors for his production. This original play is making its premiere at Cotuit Center for the Arts' Black Box Theater. Actors will be asked to read from the script which will be provided at the auditions. The Director is seeking actors with attitude, energy and emotional range. The role of Caitlin will require the ability to move slowly and gracefully as a ballet dancer. How to Make Technology Work for your Art with Marc Kundmann, February 22, 10 am - 12 pm: Marc will talk about his own experiences with technology. He will explain and demonstrate how he uses technology in his own art studio. Then the group will share how they presented use or would like to use technology, and discuss the possibilities. You will have an opportunity to try out apps on your own equipment under Marc's guidance. Please bring your own smart-phones, tablets and laptops!

Drawing the Face, the Figure, and the Space Around It with Debbie Nadolney, now - March 4, 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm: With the use of the model, this workshop will look at ways of seeing that integrates the portrait and the figure with the space that exists around it. This awareness is liberating and creates some exciting possibilities in the process of finding your piece.

*Free Workshop* Drawing for Everyone with Donald Beal, March 8, 12 - 2 pm: This drawing workshop is designated to show you that drawing is not to be feared. Donald Beal, an experienced professor, as well as artist, will demonstrate methods of life drawing from a mode. You will get to try your own hand at drawing, while Beal circulates with helpful hints.

Exploring Monotype with Vicky Tomayko, now - March 17, 10 am - 2 pm: Monotype has a history dating back to the 1640s. In this workshop you will explore a variety of approaches and methods for printing with and without a press, using both oil and water based inks. This is a medium for people who like to experience and want to create a series of works in rapid succession.

Drawing from Observation with Kathryn Smith, now - March 24, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm: Beginning and intermediate levels are welcome to this intensive workshop. You will explore and develop your understanding of an object using observational skills and basic drawing techniques. Through a variety of two-dimensional media (pencil, marker, cont� crayon, graphite sticks) you'll begin an in-depth exploration of an object through various traditional drawing methods, building to a still-life composition using the original object and techniques introduced throughout the session.

Block Printing Workshop at Cape Cod Museum of Art

Cape Cod Museum of Art announces their upcoming Styrofoam Reduction Three-Color Block Printing workshop with Falmouth printmaker Alice Nicholson Galick on March 16, 12:30 - 4 pm.

Galick, who began making prints in the late 1960s, specializes in monotypes but is skilled at many types of printmaking. She has taught art for some 30 years and exhibited in galleries, museums and juried shows throughout New England. New Orleans to Orleans Festival announces a Call for Events with a submission deadline on February 28 at noon.
 
All events will be promoted through local media, the Cape Cod Chamber and the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. There is no charge to list your event! The goal is to attract visitors to the Lower Cape in the first two weeks of April. Think Creole menus, southern literature, local music with a Mardi Gras flavor, vibrant clothing color, local art, the history of both seaside places. The Hamiltonian Fellowship Program

Hamiltonian Artists encourages all interested artists who have not had prior gallery representation to apply for this competitive, two-year fellowship program, which serves as a steppingstone for emerging visual artists who have finished their academic training and are looking to transition into a professional art career. The fellowship program seeks to create a stimulating environment for continued artistic and professional growth. Through gallery exhibitions and art fairs, they enjoy heightened visibility and actively grow their professional networks over the course of the two-year program.

 

Sprout Film Festival

The 12th annual Sprout Film Festival will present a selection of features and shorts in all genres at in New York during a film festival running from May 31 to June 1, 2014. People with developmental disabilities as subjects and performers remain marginalized in film and television. This festival aims to raise their profile and showcase the work of this population. All lengths and genres are accepted. The festival programming committee will select and invite films at their discretion. Everyone who submits a film or video will be contacted via email, regular mail, or telephone by March 15, 2014.

 

Washington International Competition for Piano

Through the authority of its judges, high musical standards, and the quality of young performers attracted, the Washington International Competitions offer a significant opportunity for young artists to step upward from the ranks of talented students to recognition as professionals. The first-prize winner will have a solo performance with the FMMC Avanti Orchestra in the Terrace Theatre of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. The winner will also have a solo recital at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC.

 

Unsigned Only Music Competition

Unsigned Only is a unique music competition designed for solo artists, bands, and singers all over the world who are not signed to a major label record company or any of its affiliates, subsidiaries, or imprints. The Grand Prize Winner will be awarded $10,000 in cash (plus additional prizes) and one-on-one mentoring by an elite group of record company executives. First Place and Second Place winners will also be selected in each category. First Place winners in each category will receive $1,000, in addition to other prizes. Ninth Annual Voices of Peace Poetry Contest
 
The Veterans for Peace, Cape Cod - Corporal Jeffrey M. Lucey Chapter 041 invites submissions for their 2014 Voices of Peace Poetry Contest, with a hard deadline on March 28 by 5 pm.

  

The poetry contest is open to all Cape & Islands writers. Each contestant may submit only one poem, no more than 50 lines, rhymed or free verse. Poems can be hand-written or composed on a computer and printed on an 8 1/2 x 11 vertical page.
 
Poems should focus on:
  • thoughts of peace and the abolition of war, hate, or violence
  • what can I do to help make a peaceful world for all
  • some of the ways war can be avoided
  • inner peace
  • how we become peaceful within ourselves so that we can face the "other person" with mercy and forgiveness
  • examples of nonviolent attitudes and actions that lead to friendship, negotiation, social justice and peace.
Poems submission pages should be in the following format.
At the top: poem title, author's name and grade, and the poem
At the very bottom of the page: author's name, poem title, grade, name of school, town, teacher's name, address, phone number and e-mail. (This information will not be published, but we need it to contact the winners.)
 
Winners will be selected from 14 categories from grades K-12 and adults. All winners receive an awards certificate, and a published book with all the poems, and are invited to read their poems at a public gathering at the South Congregational Church, 565 Main Street, Centerville on May 3 at 10 am. Entries should be sent to: Veterans for Peace, PO Box 102, West Hyannisport, MA 02672.

State Honors Mid-Cape Cultural Council with Inaugural Award

The Massachusetts Cultural Council, which partners with 329 local councils throughout the state, named the Mid-Cape Cultural Council as the first recipient of its Council of the Year Award.


Congratulations!

 
At the biennial gathering of local cultural councils, MCC's Executive Director Anita Walker explained that the award recognizes sound grants administration, engagement with the community, and effective advocacy for the power of arts, humanities and interpretive sciences to build more livable communities.
 
Established as a regional council in 2003, the Mid-Cape Cultural Council is a partnership between the towns of Barnstable and Yarmouth. Falmouth Community Television Audible Local Ledger's Readings

Falmouth Community Television (FCTV) recently began cablecasting the Audible Local Ledger's readings of the Falmouth Enterprise and the Cape Cod Times on Public Channel 13.
 
With this action, FCTV aims to support the Audible Local Ledger's mission of bringing localized readings of news and items of interest to the listening public so that, anyone with visual impairment or physical disability that makes reading difficult, are empowered to live their lives with the great possible personal independence.
 
The readings of the Cape Cod Times are cablecast on FCTV Public Channel 13 every Monday and Friday at 5 pm. The readings for The Falmouth Enterprise are cablecast every Monday and Tuesday at 6 pm.
