Prior to the first reading, Hon. Coralee Oakes, Minister of Small Business, Red Tape Reduction & Responsible for Liquor Distribution Branch, announced the introduction of the Franchises Act at a media event in Victoria, BC.

In attendance was Lorraine McLachlan, CFA President & CEO, who was present to serve as a resource for media about franchising and the contribution franchises make to Canada.
While CFA does not pro-actively advocate for franchise legislation, we are committed to working with governments as they develop and introduce legislation. In our consultations with government, CFA advocates for a uniform approach to franchise legislation across the country, balanced with best practices.

CFA has been working with the BC government on the development of Bill 38, a Franchises Act, and will continue to do so to ensure government officials are aware of the concerns and priorities of CFA members and franchising in Canada. A public consultation is anticipated and CFA will continue to keep members apprised.

We are currently reviewing the draft Franchises Act and will provide CFA members with an analysis via Advocacy Alert.
