I was just completing my hour-long lap swim routine. The incoming Aqua Fitness class was arriving when the instructor asked the group, "How are you liking this ____ summer?" The dash represents an inappropriate colloquialism I was horrified to hear her use. (If you are reading this and don't know what I'm talking about, pull up ChatGPT and query, "In the fall, what is the name given to the phenomenon when it turns cold, then warms up again?" You'll receive the answer.)
What hearing her use this term reminded me is what I'll also remind you to do: be vigilant about the words we use, especially throughout this holiday season. If you're reading this, you likely celebrate a plethora of holidays this time of year and lead others who celebrate differently from you. Show interest in diverse practices by asking about others' celebrations. Avoid terms you may have learned from family or community in your youth and learn what's appropriate and respectful now. There's a danger in our being lax and at ease with groups we're in, and that danger is language with which we became familiar with in our pasts that may not be appropriate in this day and age.
I appreciate receiving this reminder for myself even though it was unintended. What have you become aware of, over time, that contradicts what you may have learned when growing up? Let me know when you come to Montgomery Women's Fall Kickoff event on October 15th. (How was that for a transitional reminder?!) See the registration link below in this newsletter.
Until then,
