International Dairy Foods Association calls on U.S., EU to resolve issue
The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) is calling on the U.S. government and European Commission (EC) to quickly resolve a regulatory dispute that threatens the export of dairy ingredients produced in the United States and used to make infant formulas and critical adult nutrition products in European Union member states and other nations. Unless the U.S. and EC resolve the issue in the coming weeks, the supply chain for global infant formulas will be thrown into chaos resulting in product shortages, job losses, and price increases.

ADSA Joins Coalition Letter to House Appropriators
n response to concerns over the origin of COVID, on July 14 ADSA joined 36 other scientific and medical organizations in a letter to the chair and ranking member of the House Committee on Appropriations urging that Congress follow an evidence-based process to ensure answers in the COVID pandemic are grounded in sound science, are as complete as possible, and based in fact. You can see the letter and others in the Advocacy section of the ADSA website. Wording of the Labor HHS Education spending bill that went forward in the House was consistent with this.
Senator Durbin recently sent a letter to other members of the Senate urging that robust funding be included in the infrastructure package for basic research and the rebuilding of our federally-funded research infrastructure in the fields of health, science, and agriculture. This is consistent with other legislation he has proposed and that we have urged Congress to pass.

Join us for the 40th ADSA Discover Conference on NASEM Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle
Due to continued COVID-19 related travel and gathering uncertainties coupled with delays with the NASEM publication the dates for this 40th ADSA Discover, NASEM Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle, were changed to August 30-September 2, 2021. The conference is being held as a hybrid program. Interest has been very high and both the in-person and virtual participation options have sold out. A waiting list is being maintained for both live in-person and live virtual participation registrations, but we encourage all potential registrants to consider the Recordings Only option. This provides convenient access to recordings of speaker presentations for viewing on your own schedule. Click here for “Online Registration” and current options. We are looking forward to having you participate in our August program. We are here to help you however we can with questions and requests for support. Contact conference coordinator Molly Kelley or conference director Larry Miller with questions.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM, previously known as NRC) anticipates the 2021 release of the eighth revised edition of “Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle,” the world’s most highly cited reference on dairy cattle feeding. The expectation is that final release of all chapters will be after this conference. This DiscoverSM Conference will focus on the scientific advancements in dairy cattle feeding used to revise the 2001 edition. The NASEM subcommittee members will address the substantive changes in the nutrient requirements and the conceptual approaches used to make those changes. Participants will hear reports on areas with significant knowledge gaps that still prevent more accurate prediction of the nutrient requirements. Emphasizing the interactive spirit of Discover Conferences, the agenda will incorporate structured small group discussions, including a demonstration of the software and focused discussions with the speakers. The program will bridge the fundamental science to applied dairy cattle feeding.
Conference Topics
- Feed Intake, Fats, Carbohydrates, and Energy
- Proteins and Amino Acids
- Minerals, Vitamins, and Water
- Dry Cows, Calves, and Replacement Heifers
- Using the Model
- Application of the New Requirements
Expanding to a hybrid conference format allows us to offer meaningful collaboration among our colleagues throughout the world in the manner that best meets individual needs. We hope that you will join us for this redesigned event and celebrate our collective resilience and dedication to forging connections without boundaries.
Please note: ARPAS will allow up to 15 Continuing Education Units based on contact hours and content for ARPAS members participating in this Discover Conference®. Participating ARPAS members may obtain credit for their participation by using the ARPAS website.

Conference Reminder - join us for the 41st Discover Conference: “Health Management of Calves: From Intrauterine Life to Successful Weaning”
Make your plans now to attend the 41ST ADSA DISCOVER CONFERENCESM ON FOOD ANIMAL AGRICULTURE - Health Management of Calves: From Intrauterine Life to Successful Weaning. It will be a hybrid conference with the in-person meeting being held October 25-28, 2021 at Eaglewood Resort & Spa in Itasca, IL. Registration options include in-person participation at the Eaglewood Resort & Spa, virtual participation, and a non-participation option which simply gives registrants access to the conference recordings.
The pre-weaning period is critical for the growth and future productivity of replacement animals. However, dairy cattle producers and their veterinarians continue to face important, ongoing, and emerging challenges regarding calf management from intrauterine life to the time of weaning. This conference will explore the many changes in dairy calf management practices, and research conducted over the last decade.
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Discover 41 participants, and in particular graduate students, are encouraged to submit a short abstract that describes new and innovative research findings pertaining to one of the five conference topics:

- Calf Health
- Preweaning Nutrition
- Transition to the Ruminant Calf
- Animal Welfare and Ethics
The call for abstracts is open on the DC41 website. Deadline to submit a title and brief abstract: 11:59 p.m. CDT on August 1, 2021.
Abstract presentations are limited to in-person attendees and will take place in poster format on Tuesday, October 26. This will be a unique opportunity for scientists and allied industry worldwide to interact and discuss the latest scientific findings without boundaries. Abstracts should consist of original, completed work that has not been accepted for publication in a journal, but prior presentation as either an oral or poster presentation within 12 months of the start of the Discover 41 meeting (October 2021) is acceptable. Additional details on abstract submission are available on the website.
