Faith in safety of plant-based products is misplaced
Meat continues to dominate on the grill, but the market for plant-based "meat alternatives" is growing. That growth is due in part to a belief that plant-based products are healthier than animal-meat and less susceptible to pathogens like E. coli, Salmonella and others.
Unfortunately, faith in the inherent safety of plant-based products is misplaced, according to scientists with the USDA Agricultural Research Service. Read more

NMPF, IDFA commend dairy provision in child nutrition bill
The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) welcomed this week the House Education and Labor Committee’s passage of the Healthy Meals, Healthy Kids Act, a bill which reauthorizes federal child nutrition programs.
“Dairy farmers and processors across the nation pride themselves on providing nutritious, healthful foods. Milk provides 13 essential vitamins and nutrients, including three of the four deemed to be of public health concern. Milk also is the top source of calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and vitamin D in kids ages 2-18. The most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans highlight the robust nutrient package milk provides and notes that school-aged children do not consume recommended amounts of dairy foods. Ensuring children and adolescents have access to nutrient-dense milk and healthful dairy foods is a top priority for NMPF, IDFA, and our members,” the organizations said in a joint statement. Chief ag negotiator nomination hearing held
During his nomination hearing July 28, chief agricultural negotiator nominee Doug McKalip shared with Senate Finance Committee members the experiences that will help guide him if confirmed to continue to advocate on behalf of farmers to increase market opportunities and break down trade barriers.
While starting off the hearing, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden, D-Ore., says McKalip brings nearly 30 years of federal public service to his nomination, including in a variety of roles focused on ag policy and the well-being of rural communities in America. He’s currently a top adviser to Agriculture Secretary Vilsack on trade, ag safety, national security and a host of other issues. He’s served in several other leadership positions at the Department of Agriculture and with the Domestic Policy Council. Read more

Farm Bill Priorities
Work is underway on the 2023 Farm Bill. Congress has begun to hold hearing focused on specific areas of the bill. The National Coalition for Food and Agricultural Research (NCFAR) that FASS is a member of, and the Supporters of Ag Research (SoAR) have been holding strategy sessions since the NCFAR meeting in April in an effort to develop a unified ask for the next farm bill. They will meet again on July 27 to discuss next steps. One important thing for scientists to do throughout the process is to share with their members of Congress examples of your work and the benefits this has for both producers and the public. This has benefits for both the Farm Bill and the Budget. Share your Farm Bill ideas with us so that we can help to advance them.
