Summit looks at role of meat in society

An "International Summit on the Role of Meat in Society" was held October 19-20, 2022 in Dublin, Ireland. Presentations highlighted and summarized different ways in which meat is relevant in modern society. The intent was to strongly address misinformation being distributed to consumers related to health risks from meat particularly in the EU, but more generally around the world. The summit was hosted by Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority. Presentations will be published in the March 2023 Special Issue of Animal Frontiers.

One outcome of the Summit was development of the Dublin Declaration. You can find it at https://www.dublin-declaration.org/.  The stated purpose of the declaration is “to give voice to the many scientists around the world who research diligently, honestly and successfully in the various disciplines in order to achieve a balanced view of the future of animal agriculture.”

The organizers are currently inviting scientists with on-going research, teaching, publication, or presentation activity, and who are in some way affiliated with either a university or a research-driven organization to sign the declaration indicating their support for the concepts in the Declaration.  They would like to include as many scientists from around the world as possible in the effort so are seeking our assistance in making scientists aware of the opportunity to sign the document.

Signatures will be posted on the summit website https://www.dublin-declaration.org/signatures and published in the March 2023 Special Issue of Animal Frontiers. They have strong guidelines relative to who can sign the document and protection of the information that is collected.

Critical role of animal protein highlighted at COP27

The Interamerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) convened its first-ever "Sustainable Agriculture in the Americas" pavilion at the UN Climate Summit (COP27) and partnered with the Protein PACT and other stakeholders to convene a total of nine events focused on animal agriculture's key role in sustainability solutions.

The Protein PACT events included a November 9 panel on sustainable livestock across regions and production systems, wherein National Pork Board Assistant Vice President Ashley McDonald shared U.S. pork's commitments to ethical principles, best practices, and documenting proof. The Pork Board and Pork Checkoff pioneered on-farm sustainability reports, which have been awarded $20 million in USDA Climate-Smart Commodities grant funding to expand measurement and implementation of climate-smart practices. ADSA Happenings

Coming January 12

A completed scientific manuscript represents an extraordinary effort and investment by its authors. This webinar will discuss the attributes of the ADSA ecosystem of journals, namely, the Journal of Dairy Science and JDS Communications. A “side-door view” of many of the activities involved in scholarly publishing will be shared. Geared for all, but especially for early-career scientists, this webinar will also discuss and outline several ways authors can highlight the impact and overall influence of their own individual published works. Participants will also have an opportunity to ask Paul Kononoff, Editor in Chief of the Journal of Dairy Science, questions related to these and other topics.
