Study finds organic dairy farming can reduce GHG emissions

A new study in the August issue of the Journal of Cleaner Production reveals that it is possible for farms to sequester carbon and reduce their overall greenhouse gas emissions. A University of Wisconsin Madison research group unveiled a dairy lifecycle assessment conducted on Organic Valley farms that shows small organic dairy farms, which focus on grazing and organic production techniques, are low greenhouse gas champions.  Read more

Study finds pulsed light technology kills pathogens in food

A light-based, food sanitization technique successfully eliminated multiple harmful pathogens in a new study carried out by Pennsylvania State University researchers.

The pulsed light technique shows promise as an effective alternative to the chemical, heat and water-based antimicrobial technologies commonly used in the food industry — and could be applicable more generally in sanitized environments such as hospitals, water treatment facilities and pharmaceutical plants, according to the researchers. The AJCC Research Foundation Seeks 2023 Research proposals

The AJCC Research Foundation provides support for projects addressing significant issues relative to the Jersey breed of cattle and Jersey owners. Since 1988 more than $1,000,000 has been provided in support of such research. Funding is in the form of seed money and has averaged $8,900 per project since 2011. Current Foundation’s priorities are:

       Nutrition of high-producing Jerseys, particularly practical feeding methods to maximize production of valuable milk components;

       Factors affecting management of Jersey calves;

       Factors affecting semen production of Jersey bulls;

       Factors affecting yield and/or quality of products manufactured from Jersey milk;

       Factors affecting economic impact of Jerseys: efficiencies, net income, longevity, and lifetime profit;

       Optimizing the genetic basis for improving animal health and/or enhancing product quality;

       Enhancing environmental impact associated with Jerseys;

       New technologies for safe and sustainable food production from Jersey cattle; and

       Feasibility of adding value and increasing consumer acceptance of Jersey-derived products through enhanced product quality and branding.

Click here for further information regarding the Foundation’s priorities, submission requirements and the responsibilities of recipients. The submission deadline will be December 1, 2022.

GSD Award Winners at the Annual Meeting

Graduate students are busy with many activities during the ADSA Annual Meeting. One of the highlights is recognition of award winners for their research and presentations at the meeting. This year Balchem interviewed several of the winners for their podcast. This included: Click here to listen.

  • Lautaro Rostoll, president of ADSA’s Graduate Student Division (GSD), which provides networking opportunities at the ADSA meetings in addition to professional development opportunities.
  • Dr. Corwin Nelson from the University of Florida and Kari Estes with Balchem provided a judge’s perspective on the ADSA award contest.
  • Alisson Da Mota Santos from Michigan State University received the Masters Poster Award for her presentation on the effectiveness of GnRH as a resynchronization tool in lactating dairy cows
  • Jackson Seminara from Cornell University, winner of the PhD Poster contest, discussed calcium dynamics and associated patterns of milk constituents in early lactation multiparous Holsteins.
  • Ursula Abou-Rjeileh, the winner of the Masters Oral Award, and Dr. Andres Contreras from Michigan State discussed their study that found oleic acid limits lipolysis and improves mitochondrial function in adipose tissue from periparturient dairy cows.
  • Thaina Minela, also from Michigan State, spoke about her project, which showed that lactating cows inseminated following estrus have greater early pregnancy losses compared to the fertility program Double-Ovsynch. Thaina won the PhD Oral competition.
  • Conor McCabe from the University of California Davis was featured in the program. Conor just finished a term as Dairy Production Director and is continuing on as the ADSA GSD Vice President in 2022.
