Suggested request:

Please co-sponsor and vote YES on the following League of Women Voters’ priority budget amendments. Thank you.

  • Civics Education #1170, sponsored by Rep. Vargas: This amendment level-funds the Civics Project Trust Fund line item 1595-0115 at $2.5 million. Governor Healey’s budget reduced the amount to $1 million. Civics education is critical to maintaining a healthy democracy in the current era of disinformation.
  • Voting Reforms #1277, sponsored by Rep. Frank Moran: Separates the municipal census from voter registration so that people who do not return the census form are not put on the inactive voter list. Requires polls and early voting locations be assessed once every four years to ensure compliance with federal and state laws concerning accessibility for voters with disabilities.
  • Access to Counsel #1479, sponsored by Rep. David Rogers: Amends line item 0321-1800 to include a statewide access to counsel pilot program to provide full legal representation for low-income tenants in eviction proceedings, in consultation with an advisory committee authorizing the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation to determine how to implement the program.
  • Feeding Our Neighbors Coalition #247, sponsored by Reps. Cabral and Garcia: Amends line item 4400-3067 to offer state-funded SNAP assistance.
  • Lift Our Kids Coalition #788, sponsored by Rep. Decker: Changes the effective date of the cash assistance grant increases proposed by House Ways and Means to October 2024 instead of April 2025, and includes the cash assistance program for elders and individuals with disabilities in the grant increase.
