We've been receiving more CF28 Request for Information from Customs for returning shipments of goods made in the US or returned to the US after being exported temporarily for research or other reasons. These forms can be sent by Customs to the broker and importer of record up to 1 year after a shipment has cleared customs.
If you have had returning shipments clear customs, you know that we've already been asking for additional documentation in the form of Foreign Shipper Declaration and Declaration by Owner.
However, we are increasingly being asked via Form CF28 for additional proof that the goods were exported from the U.S. If we arranged your export shipment, we will already have that documentation.
If we did not arrange the export for the shipment that is returning, we may proactively ask you for that documentation. Acceptable proof of export includes:
- Copy of customs entry into the foreign country
- U.S. export invoice and bill of lading or airwaybill
- Electronic Export Information (EEI) for the export shipment
Importers may also have noticed that our customs brokers are asking a lot more questions than previously about imported articles that may contain aluminum extrusions. This is due to recent anti-dumping rulings - more on that to follow!
