A Letter From Jamila

Dear Carly,

It's 2024! Here at ACHIEVEability, we are fired up and excited about the hope and promise the new year has to offer. This is a time to be grateful for all that we've accomplished in West Philadelphia, while also looking ahead with grit and determination to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Thank you for being a part of the ACHIEVEability Village!

As a community-based nonprofit located in a predominately Black neighborhood, we are especially proud to celebrate Black History Month in February. This month gives us an opportunity to celebrate and champion the achievements of African Americans while recognizing their central role in our collective, American history. We are fully aware of the achievements that our West Philadelphia neighbors accomplish every day. There are tons of heroes and giants among us! We live and work in a neighborhood where countless individuals have made it their mission to fight for this community, meet challenges head on, and help each other access opportunities. We are proud to stand with them.

History is not just about the past. It's the actions we take now that will create the future for many generations to come, and we want to celebrate our neighbors in the ACHIEVEability Village. Throughout this month, we will share stories about the Black heroes and champions who live and work with us in West Philadelphia. Be sure to follow our social media handles to learn more!

As we enter a new year, I also want to remind you that my door is always open. I welcome the opportunity to connect with you, hear your story, and share more about the work we do at ACHIEVEability. Send me an email, give me a call, or stop me on the street - I look forward to connecting with you in 2024.

Warm Regards,

Jamila Harris-Morrison
Executive Director

Partner Spotlight:

MZT, the mobile division of Miriam Medical Clinics

Our West Philadelphia neighbors face many challenges, particularly meeting their basic health needs. ACHIEVEability's monthly community resource events make it easier for neighbors to prioritize their personal health as well as the collective wellness of the community. MZT is an essential partner in this work.

At ACHIEVEability's community events, MZT provides blood pressure and type 2 diabetes screenings as well as COVID vaccinations - simple yet essential components of healthcare. MZT also engages in a wide range of conversations contributing to long-lasting heath - from nutrition planning to medication reminders.

MZT staff member, April, shared, "Every event we've attended has been memorable. People need support. People do not talk about their needs but when the opportunity to address the needs is presented, the community shows up."

We are grateful to have MZT and MIriam Medical Clinics as a trusted, dependable partner. Want to learn how you can join us a community resource event partner, email us at development@achieve-ability.org.

Program Spotlight:

TechUp Instructor and Participants

WorkSmart West Philly launched the second cohort of its TechUp program on October 30th, 2023. TechUp is a job-training program whose goal is to disrupt the cycle of dead-end jobs for marginalized communities by providing technical training and placing Black workers in living-wage, high-growth careers.

Our Salesforce training instructor, Daneen J, has a professional background as a Salesforce certified business analyst and certified Salesforce education consultant. Daneen made a special visit to Philly last month to meet and provide in-person instruction to students. She shared, "What's unique about TechUp is how often we get to meet, which really builds a supportive community. And the individuals who are in the program will then go out and impact their community. I did a program where we were scattered all over, but you could potentially be in TechUp working with somebody who will become your colleague and so you can continue to work and grow and develop together."

We are so grateful to the volunteers and funders who have made this program possible, including Brook J. Lenfest Foundation, Comcast, Life Science Cares, Philadelphia Foundation, Philanthropitch, Truist, Spark Therapeutics and William Penn Foundation. Thank you for investing in TechUp participants who are striving to build a career that serves their career goals, their families and West Philadelphia.

How you can help

We are looking for internship hosts for TechUp participants to put their skills and Salesforce certifications to good use. Is your workplace a good candidate? Email Director of Workforce Development to talk partnership opportunities.
