Joint letter regarding potential Air Canada labour disruption
The Alberta Chambers of Commerce has joined Canada’s leading business organizations in signing a joint letter with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, urging Minister Steven MacKinnon to take immediate action to prevent a potential strike by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) at Air Canada. A strike would disrupt travel for up to 150,000 passengers daily and jeopardize key supply chains, including vital medical supplies and goods.

Alberta addresses AUPE rallies across the province
Last week, Alberta acknowledged the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees’ (AUPE) democratic right to demonstrate for better wages with the release of a formal statement. AUPE is demanding a 26% wage increase over three years. Citing financial responsibility and balancing public service funding with fair and competitive salaries, the government’s offer stands at 7.5% over four years.

Alberta invests $2.8 million to advance Canada’s first waste-to-energy facility
Through Emissions Reduction Alberta, $2.8 million has been allocated to fund an engineering and design study for Canada’s first waste-to-energy facility. The facility will use carbon capture technology to convert municipal waste into clean electricity, with operations expected to start in 2027. Once operational, it is projected to capture and store 185,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. This initiative aligns with ACC recommendations in, "Furthering Carbon Sequestration Efforts in Alberta."

$15.6 million investment to commercialize innovation in Alberta
Canada announced over $15.6 million in federal funding for 16 Alberta projects to boost innovation in sectors such as digital technology, advanced manufacturing, life sciences, and clean technology. Provided through PrairiesCan, the funding will give Alberta businesses access to specialized equipment, expertise, and testing facilities to help commercialize their products. These initiatives are expected to create over 1,100 jobs and contribute to Alberta’s green economy.

Canada further challenges U.S. softwood lumber duties
Canada is initiating legal challenges against the U.S. Department of Commerce’s decision to increase duties on Canadian softwood lumber. These challenges address both anti-dumping and countervailing duties that negatively impact the Canadian lumber industry and housing costs in both nations.

Opportunity: Industrial Relations Board Chairperson and Vice-Chairpersons
The Government of Canada is currently seeking applications for the appointment of a Chairperson and full-time and part-time Vice-Chairpersons to the Canada Industrial Relations Board. These roles manage and lead processes to resolve workplace disputes and ensure good industrial relations by interpreting and applying the Canada Labour Code and related standards.
