Board Member Spotlight: Scott Kaatz

Scott Kaatz, DO, MSc, FACP, SFHM

Henry Ford Hospital

How did you become interested in the field of anticoagulation? My very first consult after finishing residency was a patient undergoing elective orthopedic surgery and I knew 5,000 units of heparin twice a day was not enough, but I did not know the answer. It took 3 hours to do that consult as I went to the library to figure it out. I read a review article by Geno Merli, and I have been hooked ever since.

Do you have an ultimate career goal? (i.e., dream job, program/facility updates, etc.) I am currently in my dream job and have already achieved my ultimate career goal by having the true honor to have served as AC Forum past president.

Do you have any hobbies? If not, how do you like to spend your free time?

Spending time on my boat. In the winter we upsize as my wife, Meg, and I love cruises. If not on the water, then by the water on a beach.

What is an interesting fact about yourself? When I was in high school, I joined the volunteer ambulance crew. I got an EMT license at 16. I grew up in a very small town and my family donated the first "ambulance." My father had been doing volunteer ambulance service during the previous years. The unique part is that my father was a funeral director and we would literally convert the ambulance into a hearse during funerals.

Do you have any pets?

Meg has 2 dogs and is nuts about them. Some spouses think they are in trouble if they get put in the 'doghouse.' With Meg, this is an upgrade.

What is your favorite family tradition? Christmas morning and spending a week on Higgins Lake in northern Michigan.

If you could meet any celebrity, who would it be and what would you do? Magic Johnson and just hanging out.

Aside from necessities, what one thing could you not go a day without? Diet Mountain Dew.

Is there anything you wish would come back in fashion? Use of the functionality for the device folks always have in hand that was developed by Alexander Graham Bell.

Anything else you’d like to share? As mentioned above, it has been an absolute joy and thrill to be part of the AC Forum family.
