ABL-SF Newsletter

MARCH 2017
Greetings From Our ABL-SF President Mike Pyon

Dear  ABL -SF Members,

I'm so glad that Spring is just around the corner. This is my favorite time of the year and I'm looking forward to the longer, warmer days! To give you a recap of recent events, we held another successful and fun-filled Lunar New Year party, as we ushered in the Year of the Rooster. Also, we've had a record number of students turn out for our 3rd Annual Career Discovery Day. The ABL board plays a crucial role in making these and other events throughout the year a reality. I wanted to make an announcement and let the members of ABL know that we are actively seeking new board members that have a strong desire to serve the Asian American community. We're seeking individuals that are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and get to work on the initiatives that can make a positive impact. If you have a desire to help set the vision and direction of ABL for the future, please reach out to either Angela Pang or myself at info@ablsf.org or (415) 691-7264 to express your interest in being considered for the board. I look forward to hearing from you!

Mike Pyon
ABL-SF President

ABL-SF Small Business Spotlight:
Sam Wo Restaurant - Thursday, April 20

https___events.sparxo.com_ABLSamWo
We continue our small business spotlight series, highlighting Sam Wo Restaurant located at 713 Clay St. in San Francisco, which has been a Chinatown staple for over 100 years. ABL-SF will have the upstairs reserved for a dinner and history talk on Thursday, April 20th from 6pm to 7:30pm.

Sam Wo Restaurant, built shortly after the 1906 earthquake at 813 Washington Street, was famous for inexpensive barbecue pork rice noodle rolls and porridge called jook until 3:00AM. The restaurant was probably best known as the workplace of Edsel Ford Fung, often called the world's rudest, worst, most insulting waiter. The dive-y hole-in-the-wall closed in April 2012 after having its health permit suspended for sanitation issues and fire and building code violations. Owner/chef David Ho with the help of community leaders and new investors eventually found a new location a few blocks from its former home and directly next to another Chinatown gathering place, Portsmouth Square. On October 21, 2015, the ribbon cutting of the new SAM WO came with a ton anticipation and excitement; it did not take long for Sam Wo to get busy.

Julie Ho, David's daughter, will be on hand to share her family's history and stories about Sam Wo Restaurant.  A portion of proceeds will benefit ABL-SF  and admission pricing includes tax and tip . Space is limited. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Come get a slice of Chinatown history as you enjoy dinner with your fellow ABL members.

ABL-SF Member Spotlight: John B. Lough, Jr.

ABL Member: John B. Lough, Jr.

Occupation: Attorney. I am an associate attorney in the San Francisco law firm Scherer Smith & Kenny LLP, where I litigate and counsel on employment law and business matters. Outside of the office, I currently serve as a Director-at-Large on the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area's (AABA) Board of Directors.

My ABL history: I became involved with ABL when my colleague and fellow AABA Board Member Charles Jung started planning monthly joint hikes with ABL. Through these joint hikes, I have built relationships with ABL members, including Director of Operations Angela Pang. With that said, I hope to continue strengthening the ties between AABA and ABL.

On a hiking note, I look forward to continue being a familiar AABA presence on upcoming joint hikes and making new ABL friends. We are tentatively slating our next hike for Saturday, May 13. Stay tuned for details.

What have you gained from being involved with ABL: The friendships. I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet and build connections with people in a range of industries and professions outside the practice of law. I like learning about what motivates people and inspires their work.

Why should others join ABL?: The best advice I received in the early part of my career is to meet people and make new friends. Our working life is demanding and sometimes solitary, so one way to maintain perspective and have a fulfilling life is to build a diverse network of colleagues and friends that you can share ideas with and seek counsel from. ABL offers those opportunities.
