ABC Pharmacy Exec Brian Nightengale Takes Reins as NACDS Board Chairman
Brian, Nightengale, president of community and specialty pharmacy for APRx partner AmerisourceBergen, this week was elected chairman of the board of directors for the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS).
Nightengale (right) served as senior vice president of community and specialty pharmacy and president of Good Neighbor Pharmacy from 2016 until late 2021, when he was promoted to his current position. He worked almost 20 years for Xcenda, AmerisourceBergen's consulting services group, becoming president in 2013.

Prior to joining Xcenda, Nightengale was an assistant professor at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, where he had earlier earned his pharmacy degree. After graduating from pharmacy school, he spent nearly 10 years working in independent retail and nuclear pharmacies.

“I am grateful to have this opportunity to serve NACDS as it continues its mission to advance and defend the interests of community pharmacy," Nightengale told APRx. "It’s been my privilege to lead Good Neighbor Pharmacy in its fight to improve reimbursement and opportunities for thousands of independent pharmacies in the GNP ranks. I look forward to helping all of community pharmacy work together to achieve our goals.”

“The key challenges we face today transcend chain and independents and we must amplify a united voice in order to create the positive and lasting changes needed for us to deliver on the full value of what we can provide as America’s most accessible health and wellness destinations.”

Nightengale took the reins as NACDS' board chair at the association's annual conference last week, accepting the ceremonial gavel from outgoing chair Colleen Lindholz, president of Kroger Health (below). In his opening remarks at the conference, he stressed that two of NACDS' biggest priorities of 2022 are:

  • working to ensure fair and adequate pharmacy reimbursement “for the products we dispense and the care services we provide;” and
  • expanding patients’ access to pharmacy-based care services “by leveraging the lessons learned and the undeniable impact our profession has had during this pandemic.”
American Pharmacies has enjoyed a productive relationship with NACDS, which has been highly supportive of our legislative efforts in multiple states, often testifying or submitting letters in support of our bills, urging members to support our efforts and using its legislative relationships to assist us. We greatly appreciate the strong backing of NACDS and look forward to even deeper cooperation with our AmerisourceBergen ally serving as board chairman.

"NACDS has been a reliable partner for years in our passage of 20-plus bills in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Michigan," said Michael Wright, vice president of government affairs for American Pharmacies. "They are well-organized, effective and always willing to help."

"We congratulate Brian on this well-deserved honor," APRx President Laird Leavoy said. "I' know how successfully he has led GNP and Elevate in representing our independent members in the marketplace, in the advocacy arena and with federal agencies during the pandemic. NACDS likewise has been a great ally for American Pharmacies and I think Brian's leadership of their board will make that bond even stronger."
