On Friday, August 9th, during the Alabama Broadcasters Association's annual conference, board member and legal advisor Scott Johnson was honored for his 50 years of dedicated service to the Association. And, NO, he's not retiring! He's as busy as ever!
As part of the surprise celebration, the ABA announced the naming of the Association's office building the M. Scott Johnson Building. ABA President Sharon Tinsley commented, "No one before and likely no one after will ever match the impact Scott has had on the Alabama Broadcasters Association. We continue to be incredibly fortunate to have him guiding our way."
Scott began serving on the ABA Board of Directors as the Association's legal advisor in 1975. In the years since, he was named the 1999 Broadcaster of the Year and inducted into the ABA Hall of Fame in 2007.
He was surprised at the August 9th luncheon by the appearance of family and friends, including more than a dozen former ABA board chairmen and former board members, to see him honored. The ABA presented Scott with a glass blown Cahaba Lily crafted especially for him by a Birmingham artist and chosen for his love of the outdoors and his home state of Alabama. Scott has been an outdoor enthusiast for a long time. He is past President of the well-known Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and was a Board Member of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, which coordinates management of and helps preserve the AT.
In addition to the piece of art presented by the ABA, Scott received a commendation from Governor Kay Ivey on behalf of the State of Alabama, recognizing him for his decades of service to the Association and broadcasters across the state. During the luncheon, a compilation video was shown featuring several ABA board chairmen, NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt, clients and a former colleague who shared congratulatory messages and memories. The compilation video played at the luncheon, along with all the congratulatory videos in their entirety, may be seen on the ABA YouTube channel in this Playlist.
Scott, a Gadsden native, graduated from Birmingham Southern in 1966. He received his Juris Doctor at Duke University in 1969 and was admitted to the Alabama Bar in the same year. In 1970, he became a member of the District of Columbia bar. He is also a member of the US Supreme Court Bar, FCC Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. Scott is currently serving clients from his position with law firm Smithwick & Belendiuk.
