AAVLD Program Chair's Message
The AAVLD Annual meeting provides the opportunity to interact with colleagues from many disciplines, learn about what colleagues are doing, and work together on moving our Association forward. The scientific sessions provide the best forum for presenting the work we do every day, and for providing continuing education opportunities. In order to make these sessions the best that they can be, we need YOU to submit your abstracts. The deadline is rapidly approaching, and we need your submissions! Don’t forget that only those applying for awards need to submit a presentation recording. Everyone else, we need your abstracts submitted ASAP! Thanks for all that you do on a day-to-day basis, and we’re looking forward to seeing you in October!

The first AAVLD/NVSL Summer Diagnostic Symposium was held June 10th -13th in Ithaca NY. The symposium was hosted by the Cornell Animal Health Diagnostic Center, the official New York State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. There were 108 in attendance from AAVLD and NAHLN laboratories across the USA. Bench scientists in particular were encouraged to attend this CE event which included 2 days of presentations with breakout discussions, all focused on the topic of molecular diagnostics. Generous funding from USDA covered most of the expenses including travel expenses of the attendees (via cooperative agreements to AAVLD from NVSL and USDA APHIS grants managed by CSU). Finding opportunities for bench scientists to obtain CE has been a long-term goal of both AAVLD and NVSL who have been collaborating together on lab workforce development. The organizing committee was Suelee Robbe-Austerman, Stephen Cassle, Christina Loiacono, Diego Diel, Francois Elvinger. Kristy Pabilonia and David Zeman. Crissy Carter and Reda Ozuna were conference managers. A big thank you to all sponsors, attendees, presenters, and moderators for making this event a success. A proceedings document will appear soon on the AAVLD website’s Learning Management System (LMS).
|
Stay tuned for further AAVLD Symposium's in the future.
AAVLD/NVSL Next Summer Diagnostic Symposium is in discussion. Information will be released soon. For the most up to date information click on the link below to follow up on details.

TO THE EDITOR:
In late March 2024, highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) of the H5N1 subtype was for the first time detected in nasal swabs and milk of dairy cows, increasing concern that HPAI A(H5N1) viruses may enter the human food chain. The Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory obtained cow’s milk samples from an affected herd in New Mexico, from which eight HPAI A(H5N1) viruses were isolated (Table S1; for details, see the Supplementary Appendix, available with the full text of this letter at NEJM.org).

Mycobacterium genavense granulomatous typhlocolitis in a horse, Kramer et al.
Abstract. A 23-y-old gelding was presented to a veterinary teaching hospital with a history of chronic, refractory diarrhea. Clinically, the horse was in poor body condition, with a thickened and corrugated large intestine identified by transcutaneous abdominal ultrasonography. At postmortem examination following euthanasia, the large colon and cecum had segmental thickening of the intestinal wall with innumerable mucosal ulcers and prominent polypoid mucosal masses. Many mesenteric and hepatic lymph nodes were enlarged. Histology revealed granulomatous and ulcerative typhlocolitis and granulomatous lymphadenitis with myriad acid-fast, variably gram-positive, intrahistiocytic bacilli that stained by immunohistochemistry for mycobacteria. Molecular testing by PCR and sequencing identified the causative agent as Mycobacterium genavense, which is an unusual presentation of infection in a horse. More

Interstitial lung diseases frequently represent a diagnostic challenge for veterinary diagnosticians. This challenge can be identified at all stages of diagnosis, particularly with gross and histologic interpretation. Moreover, each animal species varies in pulmonary physiology, pathology, and frequency of different diseases, which add more layers of complexity to this already difficult pattern. We aim to expand our knowledge of this intricate pattern to better investigate our lung submissions, describe lesions, and finally diagnose interstitial lung diseases.
We are inviting submissions to a JVDI special section on Interstitial lung disease in domestic animals to be guest edited by Dr. Francisco R. Carvallo, Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech, and Dr. Jeff Caswell, Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph.
If you are interested, please submit an abstract of up to 250 words describing your proposed topic by September 30, 2024.
Primary research papers, case series, and reviews of a focused topic will be considered, as will single-animal case reports if they are novel and include a review of the literature on the focused topic of the report. For abstracts on topics considered suitable for the special issue, authors will be notified by October 30, 2024, and full submissions will be expected by April 30, 2025. Submitted manuscripts will proceed through the usual JVDI peer-review and editorial processes, with publications expected in the fall of 2025. Page charges of $75/printed page will apply - there is no color page charge for online-only publications.
Please submit your abstract to guest editor Dr. Francisco R. Carvallo, fcarvallo@vt.edu
