Discover AAVLD Membership Advantages | |
Tanya LeRoith, DVM, PhD, DACVP
As the days get longer, and winter finally starts to loosen its grip (especially for those of us on the east coast), it’s time to renew your AAVLD membership if you haven’t already done so. And please reach out to your co-workers and colleagues ask them to join if they are not members. AAVLD members come from more than 32 countries worldwide and bring vast expertise to the organization. There are currently over 1000 members, and we seek to encourage all members of veterinary diagnostics labs, including students, administration and support staff, technical staff, and subject matter experts to apply. Our goal is to continue to increase programming at the annual meeting to include all member disciplines and interests.
Membership benefits include access to the AAVLD newsletter to stay up-to-date with the latest scientific diagnostic reports, and on-line access to the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation, the most informative veterinary diagnostic journal in publication. In addition, members receive reduced registration fees to the AAVLD/USAHA annual meeting (in National Harbor, Maryland, close to the nation’s capital in 2023), and the ability to attend and serve on most committees. The annual meeting and electronic lists allow members to interact more closely with peers in similar disciplines to network and get help with challenging cases.
I have been a member of AAVLD since 2006, and the organization helped shape my career from a newly minted pathologist, to the director of a diagnostic lab, and now to Vice President of AAVLD. I have found the organization and members to be incredibly helpful and encouraging at all steps of the way, and I would love for the organization to serve everyone in the same way.
Please let me know if you have any thoughts on membership, and what AAVLD can do to be a more inclusive organization.
Tanya LeRoith
Vice President, AAVLD 2023

Fatal balamuthosis in a Siberian tiger and a literature review of detection options for free-living amoebic infections in animals, Niedringhaus et al.
Abstract. Free-living amoebae are rare causes of morbidity and mortality in humans and animals around the globe. Because the route of exposure and clinical progression of disease caused by different species of amoebae may vary in people and animals, determining the species of amoeba present is important. We describe here a fatal infection by the free-living amoeba Balamuthia mandrillaris in a Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica).
