AAVLD President Elect & Program Chair Message

The birds are migrating and the snow is melting in the Midwest. I am sure most of us are preparing for highly pathogenic influenza and as I write this, there are 4 states with positive birds. However, now is also the time to get excited about the joint AAVLD/USAHA meeting in National Harbor, MD October 12-18th! The program committee has been working hard over the past few months and it is going to be a great meeting. Because of all the great feedback we received in 2022, we will be following the same format with the awards luncheon and keynote speaker at the president’s dinner.

The abstract submission portal has been open since March 1st and our goal is to have 200 abstracts to fill out several days of symposia to showcase all the great work happening in our member laboratories and with collaborative partners. I would like to point out a few important changes and deadlines for 2023 to help the review and awards process go more smoothly. Most importantly, to be considered for any award, abstracts must be submitted by 11:59pm on Monday, June 5th, 2023. June 5th is also the deadline for full consideration for all abstracts. This deadline may be extended but an extension is not guaranteed. Additionally, to be considered for awards, the 12-minute recordings of the presentations are due by 11:59pm on Friday, September 1st, 2023.

We have solidified our plenary session for October that will focus on workforce development with trends, forecasting, and tools to use to strengthen our workforce. Our speakers will include Dr. Andrew McCabe, Executive Director of the AAVMC, Dr. Kristie Johnson from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Clinical Microbiology Subcommittee Chair for ASM, Dr. Garry Morgan II, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, and Karen Konrath, President of Transitions Coaching.

We are excited for our scientific and plenary programs to motivate and engage the AAVLD membership for continued growth and collaborative scientific work. Don’t forget to include the keynote speaker at the President’s dinner, the awards luncheon, committee meetings, poster sessions, exhibitor show, coffee meetings, and meals with friends to round out your itinerary for another great AAVLD meeting.

Any feedback for the meeting is welcome!

Equine abortion and stillbirth in California: a review of 1,774 cases received at a diagnostic laboratory,

1990–2022; Cantón et al.

Reproductive failure represents an important cause of economic loss for the equine industry. We reviewed the cases of equine abortion and stillbirth submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System, University of California–Davis from 1990 to 2022. A total of 1,774 cases were reviewed. A confirmed cause of abortion was determined in 29.2% of the cases. Abortion or stillbirth was attributed to infectious agents in 18.7% of the cases, with Streptococcus spp., equine herpesvirus 1, and Leptospira spp. being the most prevalent. Noninfectious causes of abortion were established in 10.5% of the cases, with umbilical cord torsion being the most common. In 70.8% of the cases, a definitive cause of abortion could not be established. Our study demonstrated the difficulties in establishing an etiologic diagnosis, even when following a standard diagnostic work-up. New diagnostic approaches are needed to improve the likelihood of reaching a final diagnosis in cases of equine abortion and stillbirth.

The keyword this month is SNOW:

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.

~John Ruskin

Advice is like snow - the softer it falls, the longer it dwells upon, and the deeper it sinks into the mind.

~Samuel Taylor Coleridge

I used to be Snow White, but I drifted.

~Mae West

The Eskimos had fifty-two names for snow because it was important to them: there ought to be as many for love.
