Message from the President
|
At long last it’s time to resume our monthly AAUW SA meetings beginning September 5th! It’s been a challenging time since our last meeting in March. We are stronger together, so let’s get going! We already know AAUW 2020-2021 will be unlike any other year, and your Board has been working with extra vigor to make this coming year eventful. With the help of Zoom, we have a way to connect for our monthly meetings, including our guest speaker program, as well as continuing with selected interest groups. We’ve had great success linking up for Book Discussion and Wine, Women, and Wisdom. Whether on your computer, tablet or phone, everyone can join in and share in the events. In addition, you are encouraged to invite your friends to our September meeting – linking in along with us.
Our theme this year is Economic and Physical Well-Being for All, which supports our mission of advancing gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy and the AAUW vision of Equity for All. With these in mind, we face the coronavirus epidemic and its solution, the economic impact of it, and continued civil and human rights issues. Our monthly guest speakers will help to educate us and highlight the key points of today’s issues. We are very fortunate to welcome the Bexar County Elections Administrator, Jacquelyn Callanen, as our September guest speaker. Ms. Callanen’s presentation will focus on the upcoming elections and Voting in Bexar County.
The early voting period for the November 3rd election has been extended and runs October 13-30. Members may also vote by mail if you are 65 years of age and older, sick or disabled, or will be away from your county during early voting and Election Day. An application to vote by mail may be obtained by contacting the Bexar County Elections Department at (210) 335-8683 or by printing an application at: https://webservices.sos.state.tx.us/forms/5-15f.pdf .
A related upcoming event on August 26th at 7 PM via Zoom, sponsored by the SA League of Women Voters and Can We Talk?, is the 100th Anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment that secured the right to vote for women. Sign up by August 20th at: hardwonnotdone.lwvsa@gmail.com.
The annual update of the Branch Directory and Bylaws will be published and distributed in September. Please send me any changes in your address, phone numbers, and education/degree information as soon as possible.
Many members have used the membership dues renewal online in making their dues payment this year. Checks are also accepted. We still have a few members whose payments are past due. Contact Kathy Dicke (VP Membership) if you have questions. Also note the information below in this Newsletter.
I am honored to serve as your President, as is your new Board. We look forward to learning, working and enjoying our times together over the coming year. We all must do our best to stay healthy in body, mind, and soul. We are challenged and we are up to it!
Looking forward –
Cheryl Fuller

AAUW Greatest Needs Fund (9110)
This fund allows AAUW to respond rapidly, in our communications and advocacy, to critical issues affecting women as they emerge — whether it’s a new threat to Title IX, an opportunity to partner with employers, or the dawn of a social justice movement like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter. When donations are not restricted to fellowships or specific projects, we have the dollars we need to pivot as the national dialogue shifts — and get our work covered by major media outlets such as the New York Times, CNN and Fortune.
Greatest Needs is also what fuels our groundbreaking research and effective advocacy work to pass fair-pay laws and other key equity legislation.
Giving to Greatest Needs is a great way to ensure AAUW’s continued visibility, relevance and sustainability.

College/University Update
College and University activities in the fall are uncertain. Faculty minds are on meeting course goals in very different ways and keeping all safe. We are so pleased that Palo Alto College, that has been a member for several years, has appointed Elizabeth Tanner and Katherine Beaumont as representatives so that their students and faculty will now have access to national information. San Antonio College, University of the Incarnate Word, and University of Texas at San Antonio are also C/U Members.
If you are affiliated with a C/U in our area and they are not members of AAUW, please let me know. Our C/U committee of Martha Steele and Diane Carr, along with myself, will work with you so that more C/U students and faculty can benefit from AAUW membership and the many programs that AAUW has available. The $175 C/U membership fee brings a whole lot for that money!

AAUW Public Policy
The Status of Women in Leadership
The pandemic, racial unrest, economic uncertainty, and food insecurity are part of daily life now. This is not what we expected when we had our last in person AAUW meeting on March 7, 2020! We wonder when things will return to normal, and what normal will look like going forward. Nevertheless, in these times of uncertainty, the AAUW mission of advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research unites us and our efforts to make the world a better place for us and for those who follow.
Across the country, we will soon be voting to put strong leaders in place that that work together to get things done for the good of all. AAUW has webinars and research reports that address the status of women in leadership. Bias and inclusion are key topics. To see an excellent webinar on bias and inclusion that was presented in July, click below.
