March is Women's History Month and March 8 is International Women's Day- let's celebrate!
Did you know that March is Women’s History Month? If so, do you know that the roots of recognizing the importance of women’s history began in Sonoma County? Molly MacGregor, a teaching graduate at Sonoma State University in the late 1970’s, recognized that ‘all of us teach what we know’ and there was scant history of women available. And so it began. Gerda Lerner a nationally recognized historian championed the idea and by 1987 Women’s History Month was on the calendar.
"Inspire inclusion" is one of the themes of International Women's Day, celebrating the economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This March, let's explore some of the links in this newsletter about interesting women and AAUW history.
As we head toward our April 13th celebration of AAUW – past, present, future, we are reminded that we have followed the footsteps of many amazing women and now it is up to us to provide the footsteps and the support along the path.

The AAUW-California Board of Directors and the Board of Directors of AAUW Marin have unanimously joined with the AAUW national board in encouraging all members to vote to support opening up AAUW membership. Member voting on the proposed bylaw change to eliminate the degree requirement for membership in AAUW begins April 3 and continues until May 15.
Have questions about this proposed change? Check out these resources:
Still have more questions? See us at the April 13th meeting!

Chat with Leslie
We're off! The Fund team sent you a message mid February about the good work of the AAUW Fund and our branch goal –
100% Marin participation in the AAUW Fund this year! No matter what amount you feel comfortable donating - it is all about participation! We have a fun April event planned to celebrate how far we have come and remember that we still have much to do as women.
April 13th has a Suffragette Theme, so come wearing something white. We’ll have a beautiful blue sash for you - thank you Sarah Perry! Plus if you donate to the Fund, we have a special pin to add to your sash. The design is hush hush - you can try to get it out of Nancy Finston! We plan to celebrate AAUW Marin Past. Present, and Future with videos, interviews, pictures, and, of course, food. Please put April 13, 2-4 pm at The Key Room on your calendar and look for a mid-month message from Kathleen Clark!
Kudos!
Cherie Sorokin was elected president of the AAUW National Board! Congratulations Cherie!

Something Different this Month! | |
|
Tuesday, March 26--A Conversation with Felecia Gaston and Elaine Petrocelli.
6:30-8:00 pm. Guzman Hall,
Dominican Campus. A co-sponsored event.
This month we are joining with the Institute for Leadership Studies and Book Passage to sponsor an early evening program on Marin City history. Yes, Felecia Gaston will join us again in an interview by Elaine Petrocelli. Please join us for this overview of the lives and struggles of Marin City's residents from its founders to those who live there today. Light refreshments will be served. Tickets, which include a copy of the book A Brand New Start, This Is Home, are $30 and are available on the Book Passage website or by using this link to Dominican Institute for Leadership Studies. Spread the word!
Anytime, Almost Anywhere--Mary Church Terrell and the Fight to Integrate AAUW.
If you missed this AAUW-CA webinar, we highly recommend watching the recorded video of the presentation. You can access it here. Terrell was a co-founder of the NAACP and became AAUW's first Black branch member, but not without a lawsuit. Interesting in and of itself, the video also makes you think about our efforts today to allow non-degreed women and men to join AAUW.

AAUW Marin Recruits Student Members
Mentors Wanted!
Deb Learner, new branch COM liaison, with the assistance of Gerrie Young and Leslie Zimring (in photos below) recruited student members at the College of Marin Resource Fair on February 14. Here's Deb's report.
