If you did not receive Unemployment benefits in 2020, yet still received a 1099-G form from IDES, this may indicate that a fraudulent claim was filed in your name: Please immediately contact IDES at (800) 244-5631. Follow the prompts to indicate you received a 1099-G form in error:
- Select your language
- Press 2 – Individual
- Press 1 – Received 1099-G in error
IDES representatives will return calls on a first-in, first-out basis to ensure the fraudulent claim is shut down, and to address the 1099-G form. If you are already awaiting a callback for a different inquiry, we will be able to handle your 1099-G related questions on that same call. There is no need to queue for an additional callback.
Once a fraudulent claim is reported, investigated, and confirmed by IDES, the victim will not be held responsible for repaying any benefits fraudsters may have received in their name, nor will they be held responsible for tax implications resulting from a fraudulent claim. The IRS has provided guidance to states regarding these nationwide fraud schemes. IDES understands the urgency associated with tax season, and is committed to ensuring agency resources are available to assist individuals who received a form in error.
There is an increase in the unemployment scam and it is happening in our area.
How can I spot unemployment insurance identity theft?
- You receive a debit card or an unemployment insurance letter (UI Finding) and have not filed a claim for benefits.
- You are notified by your employer that a claim for benefits has been filed when you have not been separated from employment.
- You attempt to file a claim online and one already exits.
- You receive IRS correspondence regarding unreported UI benefits.
- You receive notice of a state or federal tax offset.
What steps should I take if I receive a debit card or a UI Finding letter, and did not file for unemployment benefits?
If you suspect a claim has been submitted using your information, and you have not applied for unemployment insurance benefits in Illinois, take steps as follows:
-
Report the fraudulent claim here.
- DO NOT activate the debit card that was mailed to you.
- DO NOT contact KeyBank.
-
Request your free credit reports via www.annualcreditreport.com and review them for other fraudulent activities.
I also read that you should do the following.
-
Call the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877 382-4357 or go to www.identitytheft.gov
- Notify all banks, credit card companies and credit agencies that your Social Security Number was stolen
- File a police report due to SSN being stolen
- Notify the Social Security Office that SSN has been stolen.
- If you receive any unemployment documents in the mail, fax a letter to IDES at (217) 557-4913, indicate this is a fraud claim, indicate that you did not file and attach copies of the information you received from IDES.
