Volume 193 | May 2024 in Review

| May Treasure Talk 2024!

I was at a national conference in Albany, NY, last week. The conference was all about respite and its importance for family caregivers. My purpose there was to let others know that "Caregiving Youth Need Respite Too!" For many of you, your caregiving increases because you will be home more...caregiving continues even though school is out!

Please be sure to take a break and attend our summer activities, including camp at FAU on July 2nd.

If you need help with your caregiving, or for your family, please let us know - your AACY Team is here for you throughout the year!

How Being Around Other Caregiving Youth Can Help You

One of the ways the CYP helps to support you is when you meet others who are going through the same challenges you are, and you realize you are no longer alone! Participating in its activities and other services also gives you a break (respite) and helps reduce your stress.

When you spend time with other students in the Caregiving Youth Project, you'll find friends who understand what you're going through. You can share tips to make caregiving easier and enjoy fun activities together to take a break. It also helps you feel stronger and more confident because you see others managing similar challenges. Plus, you can learn new skills in workshops that can help you both at home and in school.

Respite care is all about making sure you have the time and support you need to take care of yourself, just like you take care of your family members. This way, you can stay healthy, happy, and successful in everything you do. Spending time with others like you can make caregiving less stressful and more enjoyable. Remember, you're not alone!

| Caregiving Youth: Sharing Your Stories

My name is: Riley

My grade is: 7th grade

I care for my: Mom and Dad

“My name is Riley, I’m a 7th grader. I help to take care of my mom and dad, who both have back problems. They haven’t really discussed with me what caused them, but they both must wear a back brace when going to work.

I am Haitian American and help them with translating when making different appointments. I will help give them their medication when their backs or heads hurt. I help my mom with the cleaning around the house because I see how hard it is for her when she tries to do it.

A dream I have for my future is becoming a pediatric nurse because I have been helping my parents; I know how much I love helping others. My sister is a pediatric nurse and because I really enjoy working with kids, I want to be one too.

I’ve just started Skills Building Groups once a week. I really like it because it has helped me understand my emotions and how to control them. I am speaking up and expressing myself a lot more!"

Way to be, Riley! Remember, you're not alone in this. The Caregiving Youth Project is here for you, and so are all the other amazing young caregivers out there! Keep being strong, keep being awesome, and keep sharing your stories!

Thank you for sharing your story Riley. You are an inspiration to all of us! Keep doing great things!

| Village Academy on the Art and Sara Jo Kobacker Campus

"School Shout Out to Ms. Latoya Dixon, the principal at Village Academy on the Art and Sara Jo Kobacker Campus, Vice Principal Jimmy Rojas, and Middle School Guidance Counselor Janier Sideregts.

My experience at Village Academy has been nothing short of extraordinary. From Ms. Rolle’s assistance in the office, making sure to call both the middle and high school students for intakes, groups, and check-ins to Ms. Sideregts assistance with providing the student schedules beforehand, testing schedules for Middle and High School, student referrals, and a quiet place to meet with students.

I always feel welcome and ready to be helped with anything at a moment’s notice. I thank them so much for making me so comfortable when at the school and providing so much support to the Caregiving Youth!" - Schmy Dieujuste, B.A, Family Specialist

| Amoy Gordon, CYP Director at International Young Carers Conference in Manchester

Last month, Amoy Gordon, Caregiving Youth Project Director, and other US Experts Shared Insights at the International Young Carers Conference in Manchester, England. This was a fantastic opportunity to engage with a global audience on Caregiving Youth issues and advancements. A key takeaway from the international conference is that no matter what country you live in, the feelings that surround being a Caregiving Youth are the same.

Join us and spread the word! To participate in our program, Caregiving Youth Project (CYP) participants must reside in Palm Beach County and can be referred through personal outreach, recommendations from school staff, or other organizations. Our support is provided both at school and in the home.

If you are a Caregiving Youth or know someone who is but they don't live in Palm Beach County, please encourage them to email us at info@aacy.org. We are committed to helping them find resources, no matter where they reside in the United States.

988 Crisis Hotline

We at AACY believe that prioritizing mental health is a year-round endeavor. When you're having a difficult time, it's important to seek help. Thankfully, there is a new phone resource available no matter where you are in the US!: Just dial the 9-8-8 hotline.

This hotline is available 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Don't suffer in silence - get help and keep hope alive.
