Summer registration is happening RIGHT NOW for the Hershey flea market, car corral and show vehicles. To acquire space(s), you must request a registration card from AACA National Headquarters. Because we are getting close to the registration deadline, please call us ASAP at 717-534-1910. We will send you your registration forms immediately. We recommend that you fill out your registration card(s), write your check and mail everything back to the Hershey Region immediately so that you do not forget/ lose it/ miss the August 15 deadline.
With a show as big as Hershey, there are a lot of moving parts for our Hershey region volunteers to coordinate. Please help us by reviewing this important information:
1. On the Show Car/Special Events registration card that you request from National Headquarters you can also choose to receive awards banquet tickets and/or antique car trailer parking reservations.
2. SHOW CAR REGISTRATION ONLY: You may register online here right now. NEW this year, you can pay for your show car registration online with a credit card. You can also still print the registration form and submit it along with your check to Jill Bower, Hershey Region AACA Show Car Chairman, 1015 Kunkles Mill Rd, Lewisberry, PA 17339.
3. There is a $20 parking fee for show car trailers parking on Boathouse Road. The fee covers the period of Tuesday, October 8, at 7 a.m. through Saturday, October 12, at 12 p.m. All vehicles must be removed by 12 p.m. Saturday or they will be towed per order of Derry Township Police.
4. You must return the completed registration card and check to Hershey Region. There will be a pre-addressed envelope enclosed in the packet that you request from National Headquarters. PLEASE read all of the information that accompanies your registration card(s).
5. Cards/checks not signed will be returned for signatures and could jeopardize your request for space(s).
6. If you have a special location request, you should send a note along with your flea market or car corral registration card. Spaces are assigned by the postmark on the envelope. You can ask for your check to be returned in the event we cannot fulfill your request. If you will accept spaces anywhere, you need not send any note. (NOTES written on registration cards will not be honored and you will be assigned at the discretion of the field chairman.)
7. Please read ALL accompanying information that will be enclosed with the registration card(s) you receive from National Headquarters. Your signature on the card confirms you have read, understand and will obey AACA and Hershey Region rules and regulations.
8. Please pay close attention to the firm postmark deadline of August 15 on the registration card. We need ample time to make assignments, enter the data and send the information to our printer. There is a very short lead time to accomplish this task.

There are NO refunds under any circumstances once the payment is received and equipment is reserved. (NOTE: Personal mobility vehicles are not registered by ScooterBug personnel.)
10. YES, YOU CAN BRING YOUR OWN SCOOTER: Personal electric mobility vehicles are authorized; however, they must be registered at one of the three registration areas. More information will be available in the literature you receive with your registration card.

At the Center of it All: Volunteers Needed for Hershey!
By Jen Wolfe, AACA Library Director, jwolfe@aaca.org
| |
We’re only a little more than 2 months away from our favorite week of the year! The Eastern Fall Nationals will be here before we know it, and the library team has spent the last couple of months planning this year’s activities. For those who’ve attended Hershey in the past, you know that the week doesn’t come together without a lot of help from those willing to volunteer.
There are several opportunities to support the library with your time during Hershey week. We’re open Monday – Thursday providing research services and need volunteers to “work the doors” by greeting visitors, reminding them to place personal items in our lockers, collecting ID cards, and helping library staff manage the flow of people into the library’s Reading Room. Most days that week we open at 8 a.m. and close at 4 p.m. (Tuesday we’ll close at 2 p.m.), so we’ll need volunteers to help fill 2-hour shifts throughout each day.
Speaking of the Yard Sale, it’s all hands on deck! In response to comments from last year regarding the long wait times for lines to get into the tents, we will be implementing some new procedures to help ease that issue. But more convenience for attendees means more hands are needed to help make it happen! The Yard Sale provides TWO great opportunities to help: bring your muscles and join the morning set-up team starting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday or come later around 3 p.m. to help work the event itself (which starts at 4 p.m.). We’ll need volunteers in the tents and at the entrances, managing the lines, helping with checkout, directing attendees to the different areas of the event, and helping clean up when it’s all over. Yard Sale night is full of excitement, enthusiasm, the thrill of the hunt, catching up with friends, and having fun with library staff…working the event places volunteers right at the center of it all!
Members interested in volunteering at the library during Hershey should contact Matt Hocker at mhocker@aaca.org or 717-534-2082. Let him know if you want to volunteer in the library that week, or at the Yard Sale on Tuesday night, and he’ll get you signed up for a shift.
Remember that the library is CLOSED on Friday for the car show – we’ll be out on the field with books for sale (weather pending!), so the headquarters building will not be open for the public that day.

These signs are only available to AACA members and are custom created to tell your vehicle's story and history.
AACA car signs cost $45 plus shipping and handling. Add an image or images for $5 each. PA residents also pay sales tax.

Here’s a short summary of some rather interesting technical specifications. Any idea what car they’re from?
“…had pushrod-operated overhead valves. In an effort to keep the valve gear quiet…used roller cam followers and an automatic zero-lash adjustment mechanism with hydraulic control on the input side of the pushrod…pistons were nickel-iron castings, not aluminum… chose to make pistons from the same material as the cylinder walls. This gave them the same coefficient of thermal expansion…to avoid piston slap. The left front chassis spring was shackled at both ends, the front shackle floating between preloaded coil springs. This was a device to prevent shimmy…the car could be set in motion in top gear. It was normal driving procedure to start in second, and shift into top at about 10 mph.”

Member Story: The Restoration of a Willys M38 Military Jeep
By Robbie Gray, Spring City, TN, erobingrayjr9@gmail.com
This is a member submitted article.
| |
Every story has a beginning point and this Willys M38 Jeep begins with my cousin. He called one night and during the conversation mentioned that he had several jeeps. This sparked an enormous interest, and we discussed if he would consider selling any of them. After much negotiation and groveling on my part, I purchased the M38 Jeep.
Once home, the decision had to be made whether to restore the military jeep or just enjoy her in her working clothes. The decision was made – RESTORE! RESTORE!
With the decision to restore this jeep, accurate record keeping was instituted including jeep manuals, logbook, parts records, punch list, timeline, and various tracking documents. After much research on the 1952 Willys M38 Jeep that was purchased, several items were identified:
-- The jeep was much more solid than originally thought. There was a good base to restore.
-- There was a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) discrepancy. The Willys VIN was correct, but the military VIN was identified as a Willys M38A1 Jeep. The Army had made a mistake, but it was resolved after help from our county clerk and local police chief.
-- The history of military service is not known and will probably never be known.
-- Manuals for all aspects of Willys M38 Jeep restoration were available.
-- Most all parts for restoration of Willys M38 Jeeps were available. Many New Old Stock (NOS) parts were available.
-- Most fording equipment had been removed from the jeep.
-- Conversion of the electrical system had been made from 24-volt to 12-volt. Conversion back to a 24-volt system was required.
-- Several parts were missing or incorrect.
-- This is a rugged military vehicle and restoration was much different than restoring a car or truck.
-- The jeep would be restored to the original condition that it left the depot in.
-- Original condition means correct down to the correct bolt, screw, washer, and nut.
|
Disassembly of the jeep began with my brother-in-law leading the project and several friends and myself assisting. The jeep was totally disassembled down to the last bolt. Parts and fasteners were “bagged and tagged” for identification. Sand blasting, bead blasting, welding, powder coating, and painting began in full force. Missing parts, incorrect parts, worn out parts, parts for the 24-volt conversion, and parts for the fording system were purchased. As the parts arrived, they were categorized and placed in boxes according to their system. The engine rebuild, transmission rebuild, transfer case rebuild, front and rear axle rebuilds, radiator refurbish, powder coating, and painting were all outsourced.
|
Then the reassembly process began. At this point, it was recognized that this jeep was different than anything else we had restored in the past. Because of this, just about any time a part or system was to be installed, research was required to determine correct part orientation, correct bolt, screw, washer, and nut. Then “dry runs for installation” were completed. This all added considerable time to the reassembly process but was necessary for a correct restoration. It should be noted that my brother-in-law is a stickler for correctness and detail, care of installation, and the process of restoration. He drove the restoration process to a total success.
Reassembly progressed and as parts were installed the frame suddenly began to take on the form of a jeep. As problems were encountered, they were quickly resolved, and the restoration continued. No problem went unresolved to the satisfaction of a correct restoration. These problems usually resulted in extra costs and small delays, but that is to be expected. Problems, delays, and extra unforeseen costs go with the territory of restoration, and the restorer must live with it in order to get the result they want in the end.
| |
Finally, restoration progressed, and the day came when the engine was started. What a beautiful sound hearing those four cylinders purring. Then another big day arrived when the test drive was to be completed. The jeep performed beautifully. We were all so excited; the hard work and perseverance had paid off. There is no description of the excitement that the restorer experiences with a successful test drive. Full restoration was then completed.
The restoration of this jeep brings back memories of my father who fought in WWII; my father-in-law who served in Germany during the Korean War; my brother who served in Korea just after the Korean War; and other family members who are serving or have served our country.
The restoration of this Willys M38 Jeep is dedicated to the men and women who are serving, have served, were wounded, and died in the service of our country. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. You are heroes and truly appreciated and loved by all who love this country.
The following quote is from a Vietnam War Veteran I met at the AACA Grand Nationals show in Bettendorf, Iowa. He was so impressed with the jeep and to whom it was dedicated that he gave me his army backpack. His quote: “Thank you for putting in so much time and affection into the restoration of your vehicle. We veterans have so much love for that jeep. Much appreciation to you all.”

Golden Crescent Region Celebrates Collector Car Appreciation Day
By Nancy Whiddon, Victoria, TX, nkw348@gmail.com
This is a member submitted article.
| |
On Collector Car Appreciation Day, July 12, 2024, our club, Golden Crescent Region AACA, cruised from Victoria, TX, to Rutersville, TX, to visit the collection of John Burkland. Mr. Burkland, his wife Betty, and their five garages were featured in one of the issues of Garage Style. The collection includes many classic cars, motorcycles, vintage farm equipment, tools and other auto related memorabilia. The 25,000 sq. ft. facility has a mechanic’s shop, bunkhouse and contains one of the finest car collections in the state of Texas. Pictured is one of our members with a 1955 Chevy, and some of our other fellows admiring the cars.
Of the Era: Pre-War (WWII) Promotion
By Walt Gosden, Guest Contributor, coachworklines@aol.com
This is a member submitted article.
| |
The best way to sell and promote a vehicle in an era before mass electronic media was by hard copy print media. How to get the attention of the specific audience who would have the funds to buy a particular vehicle was where the finesse came in.
Sales literature created by the vehicle manufacturer was great, but one had to get that publication into the hands of the public which most often ended up only being those people who visited a showroom.
Advertising in newspapers, magazines, and even newsreel at the movies was used and was often fairly effective in reaching a multitude of audiences.
Of course there were other means of promoting the products as well, but I’d like to tell you about one especially creative use of direct mail which is something still used today but not as embraced as it was a century ago.
Direct mail to masses of people who could possibly be future customers was utilized by a large number of dealerships. This was done by a major Dodge dealership in Brooklyn, NY – Bishop, McCormick & Bishop – immediately after WWI.
Dodge at that time was heavily promoting enclosed coachwork on their chassis for comfort of use during the fall and winter months. Beautifully illustrated letters were sent out to sound the call to buy a new Dodge coupe or sedan. The letters were supported by the car manufacturer, but the cost to have them printed and mailed fell upon the dealers. The eight letters I have in my collection were issued from October to February, and at least three follow-up letters went to the same prospective customer.
How many were sent out? A pencil note on the ones I have that were kept as a record by that company state that physicians were a specific target with 2,144 letters sent in October 1917. 6,038 letters sent suggested what a great Christmas present a new Dodge sedan would be. Lists of people and addresses were found in social registers and Blue Books in that era and 9,626 more letters were sent out using that as a source.
The letters are very cleverly worded and noted reliability and ease of convenient service needs. Dodge knew the importance of the repeat customer. Of the letters I have from the files of the dealership, reliability of the Dodge is stressed by pointing out that 300,000 people already owed them. A letter from October 12, 1920, ends with, "You need a sedan. You will want a Dodge Bros. sedan. You will have one when you need it most if you order now."

What is the AACA Half-Year Membership?
By Karen White, AACA Membership Department, kwhite@aaca.org
| |
The half-year membership allows new members to join AACA for the second half of the member year and pay $25 instead of the full year fee of $45. The membership includes the months of June through December. Half-year members receive three issues of Antique Automobile magazine (July/August, September/October & November/December).
Do you know anyone who would enjoy going to a car show? Maybe you know someone who would enjoy Antique Automobile magazine. This is an excellent time to encourage them to join AACA. They can test drive AACA for the second half of the member year. By the end of the year, we hope they will see the value of belonging to AACA and be ready to commit to a full year of membership for 2025!
Typically, half-year membership is only available to new members. This year we are extending the half-year offer to members who haven’t renewed for the 2024-member year yet. If you forgot to renew your membership earlier in the year, you can renew it now for only $25.
This offer is available to anyone who has been a member in the past. If you haven’t paid membership dues for a few years and have been thinking about joining AACA again, do it now for $25.

Is Your Region Prepared to Recruit New Members? |
When your region or chapter holds a local car show, that is your best opportunity to recruit new members. The people attending your show are there because they already have an interest in antique cars. If your event is open to non-members, those who have registered and are showing their cars are already willing to participate. These are the folks you should be engaging about how much you enjoy being an AACA member and that they should think about joining.
Now, don’t be caught empty-handed at this point! Make sure your region has something to hand out to potential new members. When you are planning your event, be sure to reach out to National Headquarters to get a supply of materials to help you.
All of these items are available to you at no charge:
-- AACA National Membership Brochure
-- AACA National Membership Application
-- Mustang Car Cutouts
-- AACA Region Membership Brochure

If you enjoy driving your antique vehicle, start your engine and get recognized for driving your AACA-approved vehicles throughout the calendar year with the Mileage Award Program (MAP).
Participation is voluntary and tracking mileage is your responsibility. Any time a vehicle is driven – anywhere for any reason – the mileage counts towards the award levels. Once you sign up, you will receive a badge and awards at 2,000, 5,000 and each 5,000-mile increment thereafter. The cost to become a MAP member is a one-time fee of $25.
