Brick By Brick

Building a program like the Mah Jongg World Championship was no easy feat. When Sheryl and I formed our partnership, we started from scratch. MJWC was the first tournament on our list and actually took 1 year to come to fruition. 

* The first Brick, a lawyer to protect our journey

* Second brick, we needed a venue.  A location, one that fit the glitz, glamor and prestige of the tournament. Vegas fit the template of what we were trying to construct.  Visited multiple hotels before we found the perfect home for the championship.

* We needed a hook, another brick. How could we grab the attention of tournament goers from around the country? Hence, the Golden Ticket. We knew if we could make it a contest inside a contest, we could get a winner. So, we sent out 75 packages filled with information and Golden tickets to tournament directors all over the United States.  It was difficult work finding tournaments all around the country. The tournament directors gladly gave away Golden tickets to their players and we then knew we were off to something special and never looked back.

*Printed literature was sent everywhere and social media was posted all over the place. But then, emails started coming in (a brick) with the names of winners from all around the country and in our newsletter as promised, we advertised their names proudly, as proud as they were of winning it.

Players wanted to know how they could win a ticket? The rules were clear, you had to place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in a NJML tournament or cruise. It could be a 1 day, 2 day, or a 3 day tournament. Slowly but surely the tournament registrations started coming in and players realized the "Golden Ticket" was more than prestige, it was worth $100 off your entry.

*The physical brick, this was crazy hard. We knew we needed to have a warehouse in Vegas to store all the tables and sets, cloths and merchandise rather than the back breaking transport of shipping across the country to the venue every year. - so many bricks, lol.

* Sheryl and I did not do this alone. Yes, we worked our butts off, but we had help. First and foremost, our friends/support groups, god bless   them- another brick. Mah Jongg angels, tournament directors- a brick. They knew by supporting the golden ticket, they were bringing notoriety to their tournaments and ours. But most importantly they were performing a great service to their players, an extra prize of a $100 rebate to the winners every year,- another brick.

*We knew that to claim the Mah Jongg World Championship to be the most preeminent tournament in the country, we had to come up with a staggering 1st prize and it is, it's $5000. In total each year we give away over $11,000- tons of bricks.

*The MJWC is now part of the fiber, in the history of tournaments. Building it, was large endeavor but truly a labor of love... Never have we had such a championship in American Mah Jongg history.

*The most important brick, are the attendee, the player. We could have not built this house without the unwavering support of our players. Each year 200 (give or take) shining stars saunter into the ballroom in Vegas and compete to be the next Mah Jongg World Champion. We thank you all of them and hope you come back every year.
